PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 21 West Florida men's soccer team will look to carry its momentum as the Argonauts square off against Spring Hill on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex.
About West Florida
The Argos enter the contest with a 7-2-3 record and 5-0-3 GSC record on the season, most recently defeating Shorter on the road 5-1 on Oct. 9.
West Florida is currently ranked No. 21 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll released on Oct. 11. The Argonauts moved up to No. 2 in the Gulf South Conference standings behind West Alabama.
The second year forward,
Kainan Dos Santos is second in the conference in shots (40) and seventh in goals (6). Dos Santos leads the Argos in goals (6), shots (40), and points (15). Against Shorter, the Brazilian native tallied two assists and one goal to earn the 5-1 victory over the Hawks.
Jack Patching and
Kendrick Hernandez are tied for second on the team in goals with four. Patching tallied a goal against Shorter in the 5
th minute as the Argos increased their lead to 2-0.
UWF backline led primarily by captain
Lucas Barankiewicz,
Fynn Geigle, and Eduardo Quieroz has limited opponents to 7.3 shots per game.
Nicolas Meckien is in the net for the Argos as he records 16 saves with three shutouts. Of the course of 12 games, the Argos have held opponents to 88 shots.
About Spring Hill
SHC, which sits at 4-5-3 overall on the season, is coming off a 3-0 loss to Lee on Oct. 9. The Badgers are paced by Johannes Tjostheim Hanken's eight goals and Jorgen Krohn-Petterson's three assists. SHC goalkeeper Gino Gandzior registers 604 minutes with 16 saves and .571 save percentage between the posts.
The Badgers are No. 8 in the conference standings behind Christian Brothers. Spring Hill have outscored their opponents with a margin of 20-19 as they have a shot percentage of 0.150.
Chris Leonardi is entering into his second season as the head coach of the SHC men's soccer program. In his first season with the Badgers, he led the team to an 11-8 finish. Last year, the Badgers made it to the GSC tournament semifinals match against Lee. SHC finished second in the conference in points (95) and third in assists (29).
UWF vs. SHC History
Saturday's tipoff will be the 20
th meeting in program history between these two teams. The Argos look to extend their all-time series lead 17-3, including a 9-1 win streak in Pensacola. The two programs battled it out last year before entering postseason play with UWF coming out on top 2-1. Forward
Keegan Ancelin scored both goals for the Argos to help win the victory over the Badgers.
Saturday marks the annual Bark at the Park event, so fans are encouraged to bring their furry friends. Tickets will be $5 for general admission and $3 for senior/military. UWF students will be able to attend for free with a valid nautilus card.
