Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cowan and the Argos Make Their Mark Against Montevallo

Pensacola, Fla. --- For the second game in a row, the Argos (9-2-1 overall, 7-1 GSC) put up five goals and handled the second ranked GSC team to give them their second loss of the season and remain the one seed in the conference.

Cowan recorded another hat trick and has a new career season high of 12 goals. Cowan and Mya Swinton stepped on the Falcons (9-2 overall, 5-2 GSC) early in the 3rd minute to get a quick 2-0 lead and keep it the remainder of the match. Swinton connected with Cowan up top on both goals and scored within 30 seconds of each other. A goal from 25 yards out would sink in the back of the net and quick one-two touches around the Falcons defense would be easy for Cowan to slip in another.

The next 10 minutes would be a battle as both teams played evenly. The pace and energy were high but the Argos took advantage on every opportunity they could.

In the 13th minute, the Argos earned a corner taken by Cowan. Kicking it into a crowd of Argo and Falcon players, Ahnalie Layman was able to get the first clear contact on the ball and hit a shot that was blocked but was put right at the feet of Cowan who was running to get in on the action. Cowan one-touched the ball back in towards the side netting for Kileigh Whited to deflect it into the goal and score her first goal of the season.

The following minutes would continue to be evenly played as a total of five shots between the two teams were taken but none could fall in. Just seconds before the half ended, the Argos were awarded another corner kick and earned another goal off a set piece. Taken by Layman on her right foot, the ball was able to curve in towards the goal that led to Falcon miscommunication and became an own goal.

Heading into the half with a large 4-0 lead, Cowan found herself looking at getting her third hat trick of the season. Forward Julia Comin found Cowan in the box to make it 5-0 but the Falcons quickly answered with a goal four minutes after to conclude the action for the afternoon at 5-1.

The Argos out shot the Falcons 15-8 and had a 7-5 edge on corner kicks.

Cowan is now tied second in the conference with goals and points. Cowan and Layman are tied for fifth in assist with four a piece and Swinton averages .545 assists a game and worked her way to the second most assists in the conference.
