BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The No. 10 West Florida Swimming and Diving dominated the pool on Saturday afternoon over Birmingham-Southern at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Argos finished with a combined score of 233 points which towered over Panther's final score of 96 points.
"The ladies were very good today. It is difficult to get up early and make a long drive then compete well. But that is by design so that they can not only handle less than perfect situations, but hopefully thrive in them," said head coach
Phil Kraus.
UWF had multiple athletes earn wins in several events. Freshman
Nina Imboden kicked off the meet and had two first place finishes in the 100 back (59.04) and 50 back with a time of 27.94.
Morgan Mangum touched second in 28.19 and
Amanda Serger in third (28.60).
Senior standout
Stefanie Markwardt placed first in the 50 breast with 29.78 followed by
Brooke Simila (31.31) and
Ellie Rothfuss in third (31.74).
Throughout the meet, the Argos claimed the top three spots in several events.
Freshman
Emily O'Connell made her presence known with a first-place finish in the 50 fly with a time of 25.72.
Brooke Dorr and Katie Balent touched second (25.91) and third (27.36).
In the distance well,
Sofia Kendzior placed first in the 1000 free (10:45.49),
Yael Danieli finished shortly after with 10:49.08 and
Rylee Woelk in third (10:54.50).
Kathryn Mipro dominated the pool with a first-place finish in 1:54.66 and
Aimee Patterson touched second with a time of 1:59.40 and
Sydney Hartis in third (2:02.09). Sophomore Simila performed well earning a victory in the 100 breast (1:07.24).
Shannah Dillman came in second (1:08.41) and Mikalya Puckett in third (1:01.98). The Argos placed top-three in the 200 fly with
Sydney Dawson in first (2:10.77), Balent in second (2:11.60), and O'Connell (2:13.41).
Markwardt had another first-place finish in the 50 free with 24.38. Mipro was shortly behind with 24.44 and Patterson (24.63).
On the boards, senior
Daniela Reyes came in first in the 1-meter competition with a score of 263.92. Freshman standout Adriana Sanchez-Mieses finished second with 255.29 and
Jade Fontenelle in third with a score of 255.07.
Sanchez-Mieses had quite a meet with a first place finish on the 3-meter boards (250.05).
"We now have 3 divers who have qualified for NCAA's. Coach Barb has the divers ready to compete among the best in the nation every year, but they are clicking early this year. We believe this could be our best diving group ever and are hoping to see even more throughout the year," commented Kraus.
In the 200 IM,
Lutnya Bogdanova had her first place finish of the season with a time of 2:13.23. In the last event of the meet, West Florida finished strong with a victory in the 400 free relay with a group of Markwardt,
Morgan Despres, Mipro, and Dorr in 3:33.69.
"Swimming wise we are also ahead of where we normally are at this time. We really have ladies in every class that are doing things they have not done before. Returners
Brooke Dorr and
Stefanie Markwardt have been doing awesome and
Kathryn Mipro has been on fire," stated Kraus.
