PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF women's basketball team will open its 42nd season in Valdosta, Georgia against No. 11 Eckerd on Saturday afternoon. The game was moved to The Complex on the Valdosta State campus after Palm Beach Atlantic closed its campus in preparation for Tropical Storm Nicole. UWF and Eckerd will tip-off at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
UWF brings four returnees, three starters and nine newcomers into the season following a 19-8 record last season.
Senior forward Jaclyn Jarnot was a First Team all-Gulf South Conference choice a year ago when she averaged a double-double with 17.4 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. She begins the season with 925 points and 737 rebounds in her career, which began at North Dakota in 2018-19. Frontcourt mate Zoe Piller is coming off a GSC Freshman of the Year season in which she set a UWF freshman record with 377 points (14.0 ppg) and 239 rebounds (8.9 rpg) while shooting 54.8 percent from the floor.
One of the top newcomers is graduate transfer Haley Luttrell, who scored 988 points in her 4-year career at North Greenville. She averaged 12.8 points in 42 games over her final two seasons.
The 2022-23 campaign is head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton's 11th in Pensacola and she has a 168-114 record. She is eight victories from second place and 16 from becoming the program's winningest coach.
The Argonauts will face a very strong early portion of the season, taking on No. 11 Eckerd and No. 24 Lee in two of the first three games.
Eckerd returns eight players, including the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year in Maya Price (14.4 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and three other starters from an NCAA Tournament team that went 21-5. They defeated Valdosta State on Friday night, 88-58.Â
