Men's Soccer Season Comes to a Close in PK's Against Rollins

This was the 18th meeting between these two teams

PENSACOLA, Fla.- After making their third straight appearance to the NCAA tournament, the No. 4 seed West Florida suffered a heart-breaking loss after 110 minutes of play and penalty kicks to No. 5 seed Rollins on Saturday afternoon. The Argos have much to be proud of as they end their season with a 12-2-5 final record and third straight tournament appearance.

Many standout players including Kainan Dos Santos led the conference and team in goals (12), shots (63), and points (30). Dos Santos was named GSC Offensive Player of the Year as he is the sixth player in program history to earn this award. Along with Dos Santos, Fynn Geigle earned All-GSC First Team honors while Keegan Ancelin and Finn Werner received All-GSC Second Team Awards.

It was a battle from the first touch as these two squads entered the field. West Florida came out aggressive with the first two shots from Tom Preston and Jaime Guillen in the 2nd and 8th minute.

In the 9th minute, the Argos received a corner kick which was taken by Geigle, who gave a great pass to Ancelin as he headed it into the back of the net. UWF held the 1-0 the rest of the first half heading into the break.

The Tars equalized the score in the 49th minute with a shot and goal from Georgios Koliniatis. Rollins would possess the lead in the 67th minute with a second goal from Koliniatis, which was his 11th of the season.

The Argos came back in the 78th minute with a goal by Dos Santos, this marked his 12th goal of the season. At the end of regulation, UWF won the shots battle 12-8.

The game went into two overtime halves tied 2-2. In the 98th minute, Preston had a great look at the net, but the ball was saved by Tars goalkeeper Maximillian Obermeier. Both goalkeepers recorded four saves each. The Argos had two other opportunities in the second overtime with a shot by Jack Patching, but the ball was saved in the 108th minute. The other attempt was made by Dos Santos, who missed just left in the 109th minute leading the game to head into penalty kicks.

The Tars ended up winning the penalty kick shootout 4-3 to advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament. This season, UWF made their 11th Gulf South Conference Championship appearance and 9th NCAA Tournament appearance.
