HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- The reigning GSC Champions, West Florida men's soccer team advances to the Gulf South Conference Championship game after dominating AUM 4-1 on Thursday evening. The GSC final will be on Saturday, Nov. 5 against Christian Brothers. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. (CST).
The No. 1 seed Argonauts improve to 12-2-3 while remaining undefeated against GSC teams. This marks the fourth straight year UWF has made it to the GSC title game.
It was a battle between both squads in the first half with UWF tallying six shots to AUM three. The Argos would have the first shot from Kainan Dos Santos in the 2
nd minute of play then Fynn Geigle in the 5
th minute.
AUM goalkeeper Alexander Kraus had two saves on the day with one in the 21
st minute off a shot by Dos Santos. Kraus's other save was in the 63
rd minute after a face-off against Tom Preston. UWF goalkeeper Nicolas Meckien recorded two saves in the 13
th and 51
st minute. Meckien now has 24 saves on the season. Both teams went into the half scoreless.
The Argonauts were on a roll coming out of the break with a goal in the first five minutes of the second half. Forward Keegan Ancelin headed the ball into the net from inside the box to put the Argos on the board first. Defender Fynn Geigle was handed the assist.
UWF would continue their dominance with a goal six minutes later from another header by Keegan Lynch off a pass by Geigle. In the 60
th minute, Dos Santos would get fouled inside the box leading to a penalty kick and goal to increase the lead 3-0.
The final goal would come from Jaime Guillen as the ball hit the crossbar and found the net to give UWF the 4-0 lead. The Warhawks would get on the board after a goal by Jabari Broussard from Landon Surratt. The Argos would go on to win the game 4-1 and earn a spot in the GSC Championship on Saturday.
