Huntsville, Ala. --- In a neutral site, the 1-seed University of West Florida women's soccer team and 5-seed Lee, battled in 90 minutes in hopes to advance to the championship game of the GSC tournament but UWF fell just short of the prize.
It came down to the last remaining minutes as Lee pushed through to find the net and take the lead over UWF to upset the one-seed in the semifinals.
The first 45 minutes was an even match as each team took four shots but nothing fell through for the Argos or Flames as the first half remained scoreless.
Entering the second half, the Argos began to take control and generate opportunities. Just two minutes in,
Blair Cowan and
Manami Okada combined along the sideline of the attacking third to create space in the middle for forward
Brianna Pope. Okada hit a perfectly crossed ball in the box to an open Pope who headed it past the goalkeeper to get on the board first. This is Pope's eighth goal on the season and is the sixth leading scorer in the conference.
The lead would quickly fade away as the Flames earned a penalty kick 13 minutes after to even the score. UWF goalkeeper
Maciah Lipsey was just fingertips away from the save but was not enough as Flames defender, Kate Dirske, was able to put it behind the net.
The battle would continue for the two teams as possession was constantly changing and the defense was strong for both sides.
As the last minutes were counting down, the Flames saw an opening and attacked. Flames forward, Alaysia Nye, attacked the middle space and slipped past the UWF defenders and hit a driven ball to score the game-winning goal and knock UWF out of the GSC tournament.
Lee had a 10-8 shot edge and UWF hit three shots on goal – led by
Kileigh Whited with two.
Eight UWF players played all 90 minutes and held the Flames to only six shots on goal. Lipsey recorded four saves.
