PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF women's basketball team returns to action this Sunday with a home contest against Valdosta State. Tip-off at the UWF Field House for Faith & Family Day is at 2 p.m.
ABOUT UWF
* After a 1-3 start to the season, UWF has gone 4-1 and sits at 5-4. Of the team's last three losses, they have included a 4-point OT loss to Lee, a 4-point road loss to Mississippi College and a 3-point road loss to Columbus State.
* In the last five games (4-1 record), the Argos have shot 46 percent from the floor. They are also making 72.2 pct from the FT line - well above their average of 62 pct. in the first four games.

Jaclyn Jarnot is second in the GSC with 18.0 points and first with 13.6 rebounds per game thus far. She has posted a double-double in the last eight games, which lead the conference and is second nationally.
JARNOT NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jaclyn Jarnot was named the Division 2 Women's Basketball National Player of the Week and the GSC Player of the Week following her performances last weekend.
* She averaged 28.5 points and 18.0 rebounds in a pair of victories over then-No. 5 Union and Christian Brothers. She had 24 points and 16 boards with three 3-pointers against the previously undefeated Bulldogs before posting a career-high 33 points and 20 rebounds versus the Lady Bucs on Sunday. She totaled seven assists, five steals and two blocks as well.
UWF CONTINUES TO BE A REBOUND FORCE UNDER YELTON
*Â UWF has finished first or second in rebounding in the GSC in all 11 seasons under
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton.
*Â This season the Argos have grabbed at least 40 boards in every game and rank 14th nationally with 44.7 rebounds per game - first in the GSC.
* UWF has had a double-digit rebound margin in seven of nine games this year, including the last six.

* UWF enters the VSU game with 612Â all-time wins dating back 40-plus years to the inaugural season of 1981-82. The Argonauts are 612-530Â all-time with six NCAA Tournament appearances, one Elite Eight, four GSC Regular-Season Championships and one GSC tourney title in 19 appearances.
* In 29 seasons of NCAA/GSC membership, the program is 436-336 for a .564 winning pct., ranking fifth among current members and third among those that have been in the league for at least 10 seasons.

YELTON IN SEASON 11 AT UWF

Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her 11th season at UWF and has a 173-118 record with the Argos … She is 230-202 in her 16th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the 1994 title game.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
* She is 11-10 against Valdosta State.

ABOUT VALDOSTA STATE
* VSU is one of the hottest teams in the region, having won its last seven games to push its record to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in GSC action. The Lady Blazers' lone conference loss was a 1-point decision to Lee in the second game of the 2022-23 season. VSU also defeated then-#5 Union 60-54Â two days after the Argonauts handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the year.
* VSU has the top defense in the GSC, ranking 20th nationally and first in the GSC at scoring defense, allowing just 55.0 ppg. They also swipe 10.2 per contest. Offensively, VSU is second in the GSC and 34th in the NCAA with a 35.9 3-point field goal percentage. The Lady Blazers force 20.9 turnovers per game for second in the GSC.
* Kate Tanner (10.9 ppg)Â and Tamiya Francis (10.8 ppg) have led the Lady Blazers in scoring all season. Tanner shoot 54 pct. from the floor and has also gotten to the FT line a team-high 54 times. Taylor Searcey is third in scoring at 9.4 and leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game - which is also seventh in the GSC.
* Emma Martin leads the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 48.7 pct. on 19 of 39 (24th in NCAA), while Francis is third in the league at 40.4 pct. Â
* Deandra Schirmer is in her fourth year at VSU and is 69-23 overall and 49-15 in GSC play. She is 3-1 against UWF.

* VSU leads the all-time series 29-24 and has won the last two meetings. The teams are 7-7 against each other since January of 2016.

UWF PICKED 4TH IN GSC COACHES POLL, JARNOT NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* UWF was picked to finish fourth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll … UWF earned 107 poll points and was behind Union, Lee and Valdosta State in the top three spots, respectively. That trio earned 12 of the 13 first place votes. The remaining vote went to Alabama Huntsville despite being picked tenth by the consensus. Christian Brothers, Mississippi College and West Alabama were the remaining ones in the upper half, followed in order by Delta State, Montevallo, UAH, West Georgia, Auburn Montgomery and Shorter.

Jaclyn Jarnot was named to the 5-member preseason all-GSC squad. She returns for her final go-around as an Argonaut following a First Team All-GSC and All-Region season a year ago. In 2021-22, the Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native averaged 17.4 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, while recording 18 double-doubles in 25 games. Her rebounding avg. and double-double totals were each fifth nationally in Division 2.
