CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWF women's basketball team played a near flawless third quarter to pull away from West Georgia and emerge with a 77-49 victory at the UWG Coliseum on Sunday.
UWF (3-4, 3-2 Gulf South) shot 53 percent in the contest and outscored the Wolves 24-10 in the third quarter and 44-21 after halftime.
"We had a sloppy start today but I am proud of how the team settled into the second half to play more consistent," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said.
Zoe Piller led the Argonauts with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting as she added eight rebounds and four steals.
Jaclyn Jarnot had 13 points and 15 boards for her sixth double-double of the season.
Moriah Taylor was on fire in the first half, helping keep the Argos close. She had 13 of her 15 points in the first half, making all three of her triples in that span. She also finished with seven assists.
UWF got out to a hot start, using runs of 8-2 and 7-0 in the first quarter to grab a 17-7 lead. The Wolves closed the gap in the second quarter with a 9-2 stretch before the Argos ended the half on a 7-1 lead for a 33-28 edge going into the locker room.
The third quarter saw the Argos put on a clinic, making 9-of-16 from the floor and all six free throws as they extended the lead to 57-38. UWF added to the lead in the fourth and had its largest lead of 30 points just before the end of the contest. The Argos did not commit a turnover in the third quarter while taking control of the contest.
The win was UWF's sixth-consecutive over UWG.
UWG (3-5, 2-3) got 12 points from Stephanie Torres and shot 28 percent in the game, including just 23 percent in the second half.
UWF will return home for a pair next weekend, beginning with a visit from No. XX Union (5-0, 4-0) on Friday night. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
