MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Jaclyn Jarnot and
Charlotte Ellmore each had a big game as UWF defeated Auburn Montgomery, 62-56, at the AUM Gymnasium to secure a berth in next month's Gulf South Conference Tournament.
UWF (17-6, 11-5 Gulf South) scored the first six points after halftime to grab a 35-30 lead and never trailed the remainder of the contest as the Argos won their third-consecutive game. They also improved to 11-2 all-time against AUM and 7-0 in Montgomery.
The Argonauts shot just 34 percent but scored 10 points on offensive rebounds.
Jarnot finished with 21 points, 17 rebounds and three steals. She made three of her four 3-pointers as part of 14 second-half points. Her steals and 3-point totals tied her career high. It was also her 15th double-double.
Ellmore had 17 points and a career-high 10 assists for her second career double-double. She has hit double-figure scoring in the last three games and 10 overall, marking her third-consecutive season to reach that accomplishment.
"We took some good shots in the first half but they just weren't falling and that forced us to be diligent on the glass which did keep us in it," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "In the second half it was huge to have Jaclyn step out and build that confidence for herself and the team. And that helped catapult us and carry us through the rest of the game."
The Argos led by as many as eight in the third quarter but held a slim 59-56 lead with just under a minute to play. That's when Ellmore found
Zoe Piller with a seal on her defender to lay it up to make it a two-possession game.
Piller finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for her tenth double-double of the year.
AUM (6-14, 1-3) was led by Allasha Dudley with 18 points and six rebounds.
UWF will play its final three regular-season games at the UWF Field House, beginning Thursday night against Shorter (3-12, 1-11). Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m.
