PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Trent Jeffcoat had three hits and drove in the winning run in the tenth inning to help the UWF baseball team defeat West Georgia 7-6 and complete a 3-game sweep at Jim Spooner Field Sunday.
UWF (5-4, 3-0 Gulf South) battled back from a 6-4 deficit to score a run in the fifth, eighth and tenth innings and join Shorter as 3-0 teams in the GSC after the opening weekend of play.
Jeffcoat went 3-for-6 with a run and a stolen base.
Dean Hotz,
Alden Davis and
Preston Moore all had two hits for the Argos, who finished with 12 hits. The Argonauts also had four stolen bases to finish with nine on the weekend.
"Our guys battled today and that's what you have to do to win these games," UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "We have to be able to learn to come back when we are down and hold their composure in big defensive situations.
"Our pitchers came in and did a great job.
Dilan Lawson was outstanding behind Tyler (Dowdy) and then (Chase) Wilkerson at the end with a couple of huge punchouts to give us a chance in the bottom of the tenth."
Lawson had 4.2 innings of scoreless work and allowed just one hit while striking out three.
Chase Wilkerson (1-0) earned the win after striking out two in an inning of work in the top of the tenth. Dowdy gave up six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
UWG (5-5, 0-3) had 10 hits and did its damage in the second and fifth innings, plating three runs in each frame. Sam Ladner, who was hitless in two games on Saturday was 3-for-5 with a 3-run home run in the fifth that put the Wolves ahead 6-4.
The Argos got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when they loaded the bases before
Chris Johnson scored on a groundout to cut the deficit to 6-5. UWF tied it up in the eighth when Hotz reached on an infield single. Pinch runner
Mark Townsend then stole second and scored on Davis' single to center.
Andrew Smith (1-1) took the loss after working 5.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts and allowing the runs in the eighth and tenth.
UWF will continue its 6-game homestand next weekend when it plays host to Shorter (8-3, 3-0).
