PENSACOLA, Fla. - Peyton Lewis made seven 3-pointers and the UWF women's basketball team ended the regular-season with an 81-56 victory over West Georgia at the UWF Field House on Wednesday.
Â
UWF (19-7, 13-6 Gulf South) shot 43 percent in the game and connected on 13 3-pointers as it improved to 10-3 at home. The Argonauts have won at least 10 home games in six of the last nine seasons under head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton.
Â
Lewis led all players with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Her seven triples are a career high and tied for the second-most in a game in program history. She is just the eighth UWF women's hoops player to make at least seven threes in a game.
Â
Jaclyn Jarnot was a threat all over the floor, finishing with 18 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. She also made three 3-pointers as she recorded her 17th double-double.
Â
The Argos assisted on 23 of their 30 made field goals, with point guard Maddie Griffon handing out a career-high 10 dimes to go along with her nine points.
Â
"It was a total team effort and the team was focused on pulling together for our seniors to have an exceptional final regular-season home game," Yelton said. "I thought we were a little too unselfish at times but we got settled in and hunted for shots.
"We made defensive plays when we needed to and rebounded the ball extremely well. We did the things that we do well to win basketball games."
Â
But for all of that offensive success, the Argos were just as stout on defense in building a 36-21 halftime lead. They held UWG to 21 points on 25 percent shooting in the first half.
Â
The Wolves got within 10 early in the third quarter but the Argos responded with a 7-2 run to push the lead back into double digits, extending it to 29 late in the game.
Â
UWG (9-14, 6-12) was led by Mariah Holder with 12 points and Siera Carter with 11. The Wolves shot just 35 percent overall.
Â
UWF had already secured a home game and the fourth seed in next week's 8-team GSC Basketball Tournament, presented by TicketSmarter and will now wait to see who they will face in Tuesday's quarterfinal round.
