PENSACOLA, Fla.- The UWF Men's Basketball team suffered their fourth consecutive loss falling to 9-6 in conference and 15-7 overall. Alabama Huntsville charged past the Argos in the final minutes of the game winning 72-64.
Much like the two teams' first meeting this season Alabama Huntsville got off to a hot start and made four consecutive three-pointers to start the game leading 12-0 less than two minutes into the game. The Chargers went on to shoot 17-36 from the field on 47 percent shooting, knocking down six three-pointers. UAH had just one turnover during the first half.
West Florida was 10-20 from the field on 40 percent shooting, making three three-pointers. The Argos outrebounded the Chargers 19-18 and were led in scoring at the half by
LaTrell Tate with five points.
"It was a hard fought game and I thought our guys played really hard. "said Head Coach
Jeff Burkhamer. "Our effort was good and we battled harder than we've been battling. We had a chance late in the game and sometimes it just comes down to making shots and they made shots late in the game."
The Argos opened up the second half on an 8-3 run before the Chargers called a timeout. UWF continued to build on their momentum and eventually took a 54-50 lead with 9:58 remaining in the game. Late in the second half the Chargers managed to tie the game back up at 58 apiece and would eventually close out the game. UWF was 9-27 from the field during the second half on just 33 percent shooting. UAH was 10-29 from the field on 34 percent shooting.
The Argos outrebounded the Chargers 41-35 throughout the course of the game.
Daniel Sofield had a season high 12 rebounds and finished the night with a double double after scoring 15 points. Sofield was the team's leading rebounder and scorer.
Wendell Matthews was the second leading scorer and rebounder with 13 points and six rebounds.
Overall West Florida was 19-52 from the field. Alabama Huntsville was 27-65 on 41 percent shooting. The Chargers made eight three pointers and the Argos had seven. CJ Williamson led UAH with 25 points.
Up next the squad will travel to Montevallo on Feb.10., followed by Auburn Montgomery on Feb.12., for the final regular season road contest.
