Dowdy Stellar In Series-Clinching Win For No. 10 UWF

UWF got its first series win over Florida Southern since 2015

BOX SCORE | SEASON STATS

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Tyler Dowdy allowed one run on three hits over 7.1 innings to help lead No. 10 UWF to a 6-1 series win over Florida Southern at Jim Spooner Field on Sunday.

For UWF (2-1), it was the first series win over the Mocs since 2015. The Argonauts have also won 28 of their last 33 3-game series.

Dowdy (1-0) struck out three with no walks as he scattered nine ground ball and nine fly ball outs. He gave up a solo home run in the second and a single in the third before facing the minimum over the next 5.1 innings.

"Tyler came out today and did what he did last season," UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "He only gave up two hits, he changed speeds and located (the ball) real well. He only gave up one run and I'm really proud of him for giving our team a chance on Sunday to win the game."

Catcher Josh Prizina had a pair of RBI singles, with his one to left in the fourth starting the 4-run frame that was the difference-maker in the game.

In that frame, left fielder Dean Hotz led off with a double to right center, moved to third on a Preston Moore sacrifice and scored on Prizina's base hit. Second baseman True Fontenot walked and then he and Prizina moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Right fielder Chris Johnson singled through the hole on the right side to make it a 4-1 ball game. First baseman Cullan O'Shea had a 2-out RBI single to get Johnson home.

An inning later, Hotz walked, stole second and moved to third when the throw went into center field. Two batters later Prizina singled up the middle to put the Argos up 6-1.

UWF finished with eight hits and drew four walks.

"We did not have a lot of hits out there but we had a lot of quality barrels today," Jeffcoat said. "I am pleased with a lot of the hitters and where they are at. Josh Prizina broke out today and had a couple of big hits and an RBI. Chris Johnson had a big RBI. Trent Jeffcoat continues to get on base and Cullen O'Shea had a 2-out RBI.

"We had a lot of quality 2-out at bats. We took the lead, held it and tacked on a bit and that's what you have to do on Sunday to win."

FSC (1-2) finished with three hits and committed two errors. Jake Curry (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits through four innings.

UWF will return to play next week with a road series at Rollins (1-1) in Winter Park, Florida. Friday's game at Alfond Stadium is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
