No. 13 Argonauts Win Slugfest at West Alabama

UWF sweeps fourth consecutive conference series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Fans of offense got a great show in the Sunday series finale between West Florida and West Alabama. The 13th-ranked Argonauts finished the sweep over UWA with a 15-13 win, behind four home runs and double-digit runs over the final three innings.

UWF, winners of 14 in a row, is now 17-3 on the year and a perfect 12-0 in the Gulf South Conference.

Sunday's performance was really no surprise. The West Florida offense has been extremely productive over the last several weeks, having scored at least eight runs in nine consecutive games.

Teala Howard, Kayla Mayo, and Madelyn Vasquez each finished the day with three RBIs. Vasquez hit two home runs, giving her four for the weekend and tying her for the GSC lead with eight on the year.

Vasquez's four home runs over the weekend were a team high, and she also led UWF with 8 RBIs and a 1.417 slugging percentage. Ford hit three roundtrippers in the series, with six RBIs and a double. Mayo finished the weekend batting a team-best .444 with a double and a home run with four RBIs.

In total, UWF hit .347 and slugged .684 over the weekend.

UWF took a 1-0 in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of West Alabama errors. Teala Howard reached on an error to start the game and stole second, before Madelyn Vasquez forced an error from UWA that allowed Howard to score.

But West Alabama jumped ahead quickly with four runs of their own in the first, coming on three consecutive hits from the middle of the Tigers order.

Howard would score on a passed ball in the top of the third, but UWA got solo home runs from Kacy Noland and LP Trammell in the second and third innings, along with a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 7-2 after three frames.

Howard delivered again in the fourth with a two-run triple that scored Laurynn Boggs and pinch-runner Ayana Powell to cut into the Tigers lead.

West Alabama added another run in the bottom of the fourth to make their lead 8-4, heading into the top of the fifth.

The Argonauts rallied for six runs in the fifth inning, with an RBI single from Erin Moon, a two-run triple from Morgan Zettle, and a pair of productive outs that scored runs by Howard and Kayla Mayo. Kelsey Hodges would also score on a wild pitch, giving UWF a 10-8 lead.

The lead did not last long, however. UWA's Nicole Buccieri hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ffith to give West Alabama the lead again, at 12-10.

Vasquez homered to start the top of the sixth for UWF, cutting into the UWA deficit. The solo shot made the score 12-11 and was the seventh of the year for Vasquez. She hit at least one home run in all three games over the weekend, has hit six home runs her last seven games, and has at least one RBI in nine consecutive contests.

West Alabama hit yet another solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to 13-11 going into the seventh, but UWF did not go away easily.

With two outs and trailing in the top of the seventh, Howard drove a single to left-center field, and Mayo, Jessica Ford, and Vasquez followed with back-to-back-to-back home runs to give UWF a 15-13 lead.

Montana Young finished the game off with a strikeout, a groundout, and a popup to end the game. Young improved to 4-0 on the year with 4.2 innings in relief of Kelsey Sweatt.

West Florida will host Spring Hill in a doubleheader starting at 2 pm on Tuesday and will travel to Mississippi College on Thursday for a nonconference doubleheader at noon. For all information on the team, follow @UWFSoftball on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
