PENSACOLA, Fla.- On their fourth match at home this week, the No. 17 West Florida men's tennis team improved their winning streak to six after sweeping Georgia College 7-0. This improves the Argos record to 8-2 on the season.
The Argonauts had yet again another dominant performance on their home court. The UWF men's team are undefeated with a 5-0 start at home.
In today's match, West Florida continued their success in doubles winning from all three positions.
Tomas Descarrega and his teammate
Facundo Bermejo opened up for the Argos from the No. 1 position winning the match 6-1. This improves their win streak as partners to five.
Salvador Bandeira and
Lluis Miralles Miro won their second straight match today securing the lone point victory with a 6-2 victory from the No. 2 position.
Pedro Cordeiro and
Bernardo Costa were victorious 6-1 from the No. 3 position to improve to 8-1 as a pair.
Singles play saw West Florida continue to roll as they won in straight sets from all six positions in the lineup to secure the sweep on the day.
From the top of the lineup,
Juan Cabrera won from the No. 1 position defeating Karol Malirz 7-6, 6-1. Cabrera continues his winning streak in singles to 9-0.
Facundo Bermejo was victorious from the No. 2 position, winning in two straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Rounding out the top of the lineup,
Bernardo Costa picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win from the No. 3 position.
From the bottom of the lineup,
Tomas Descarrega came out with a 6-1, 7-6 victory from the No. 4 position to continue the momentum for the Argonauts. Ekenros improves to 3-2 in singles with his victory 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 4 position. From the No. 6 position, Miro secured the last point for the Argos to ensure the victory for the Argonauts.
"They once again took care of business against a very solid team. Our doubles have been getting stronger every match and it really showed today as we dominated each of the three doubles and played very aggressively. In singles, Georgia College fought hard, but we were at once again able to pull out a lot of those tight matches," said head coach
Derrick Racine after the match.
West Florida will play GSC opponent Valdosta on Tuesday, March 15 for what will be a great match of Division II men's tennis. First set is at 10 AM at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
