West Florida Takes Down Xavier (La.) with a Strong Performance from the Bottom Half of the Lineup

The Argos remain undefeated on their home courts

PENSACOLA, Fla.- In dominant fashion, the No. 12 West Florida Men's tennis team picked up a big win against NAIA team No. 4 Xavier University of Louisiana on Saturday winning 6-1 over the Golden Rush. The Argos now improve to 9-2 on the season and continue their undefeated winning streak at home to 6-0. West Florida will be back at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Sunday to face #35 Delta State for more Gulf South Conference action.

The action started in doubles play where the Argonauts came out swinging, taking two out of the three matches to come out with the lone point.

"I was very pleased with how both teams played today. Xavier is always a very tough match and it's always very close. In both matches we split the doubles and came down to winning the third doubles to take the doubles point," said head coach Derrick Racine.

Tomas Descarrega and his partner Facundo Bermejo got the momentum going for the Argos, winning their match 6-2 from the No. 1 position.

Salvador Bandeira and Lluis Miralles Miro teamed up from the No. 2 position rallying back and forth against XULA, but ultimately dropped their match 1-6.

The next win in doubles came from Pedro Cordeiro and Bernardo Costa, who won their match 6-3 from the No. 3 position giving the Argonauts the advantage heading into singles play.

"The singles were very tight on pretty much every court but we were able to hang on and pull out victories in all but two of the matches," commented Racine.

From the top of the lineup, Bermejo was locked-in from the No. 2 position, winning in two close sets 7-6, 7-5. Descarrega battled against the Gold Rush, leading the match to go into a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Descarrega was able to pull out the win 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Juan Cabrera's match was the last match to finish for the day with a great battle against the #1 NAIA player in the country, Santiago Perez. From the No. 1 position, Cabrera dropped both sets 6-7, 4-6, but not without a fight. It was a great match of singles play for both players.

In the bottom of the lineup, Albin Ekenros won his match in a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to earn more points for the Argonauts. Miro and Cordeiro shined from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions today. Miro picked up a 7-6, 6-1 victory while Cordeiro won his match 6-1, 6-2.

"This is a great home match to prepare us for the next couple weeks of tough division two opponents," said Racine.

West Florida now looks towards conference play against Delta State on Sunday, March 20 at 10 AM. The Argos will be back at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex to face the Statesmen.
