PENSACOLA, Fla.- The UWF Women's Tennis Team concluded their fourth home match this week with a dominant win 5-2 over Georgia College this afternoon. The Argonauts improve to 4-5 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 8-3.
In competition this week, West Florida was 3-1 at their home court.
West Florida got off on the right foot with a win from all three doubles matches to secure the lone point.
Irene Recuenco and her partner
Raissa Wagner teamed up from the No. 3 position to win the match 6-1. As a double's duo, the pair sits at 4-4 in totals for the season.
Mayumi Saguchi and
Sara Yigin dominated their match from the No. 2 position 6-2. From the No. 1 position for the Argos,
Nathalia Mossambani and
Karolina Silwanowicz won their match 6-4 to secure the doubles points for West Florida.
"On the women's team, they played a great match today against a very good team. This is the first time this season we've won all three doubles matches. I think that kind of set the tone for the rest of the match," said head coach
Derrick Racine.
With the doubles point secured, the Argonauts moved to singles play where they picked up some huge wins throughout the lineup and won very close matches to defeat the Bobcats.
From the top half of the lineup,
Sara Yigin continued the momentum for the Argonauts, winning her match 6-4, 6-0 from the No. 1 position. Yigin has a two-match win streak from the No. 1 position. Recuenco and Saguchi picked up the Argonauts winning their matches from the No. 2 and No. 3 position to get West Florida off to a great start in singles play.
Mossambani and Silwanowicz dropped their matches from the No. 4 and No. 6 positions to give the Bobcats their only points of the match. Mossambani won the second set, but fell just short in a tiebreaker 2-6. Silwanowicz dropped a hard-fought battle to the Bobcats, falling 6-4, 6-4. Wagner was able to pull out the win from the No. 5 position, winning a close match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"All the singles were very close matches and our girls pulled out three out of four of the super close matches which is always key to winning," commented Racine.
West Florida will play GSC opponent Valdosta on Tuesday, March 15 for what will be a great match of Division II women's tennis. First set is at 10 AM at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
