PENSACOLA, Fla.- It was a day of great, competitive tennis play for the West Florida Women's Tennis Team as they clinched the win 4-3 today over #24 ranked Angelo State. Now 5-5 on the season and 2-1 in GSC play, the Argonauts will take on Xavier and Delta State this weekend.
In doubles, the Argonauts were able to secure a victory from the No. 1 position with
Nathalia Mossambani and her partner
Karolina Silwanowicz winning 6-4, defeating the #16 ranked doubles team in the country.
"It was an awesome match for our girls. We got down early 10 after the doubles but I think the girls knew that if they thought super hard they had a good chance to win this match," said head coach
Derrick Racine.
West Florida was unable to secure any other doubles points heading into singles play.
In singles, the Argonauts had excellent play on the courts to help secure the victory. Gulf South Conference Player of the Week,
Sara Yigin was victorious 6-1, 7-5 from the No. 1 position defeating the #44 ranked player in the nation. From the No. 3 position,
Mayumi Saguchi swept the first set 6-0, dropped the second set 1-6, but won the tiebreaker 6-4 to secure the point for the Argos.
From the bottom of the lineup, Mossambani was unable to secure the point for the Argos, falling short 2-6, 2-6 from the No. 4 position.
Raissa Wagner got the start from the No. 5 position and dropped her match in a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 3-6. Silwanowicz won in two straight sets 6-1, 7-6 from the No. 6 position.
Both teams were tied 3-3 leaving it in the hands of
Irene Recuenco to secure the victory for the Argos from the No. 2 position. It was a great match between these two athletes, Recuenco dropped the first set 5-7, but came out on top in the second set, winning 6-2 against the #20 ranked Dianela Rodriguez.
This brought the match to be determined by a tiebreaker. Recuenco swept the tiebreaker 6-0 to secure the victory over a top-ranked opponent for the Argonauts.
"We had a great effort on all courts and every match with super close but the girls hung tough and we were able to pull out a couple very close matches to give us the win. This is a big step for the girl's confidence as now they know they are improving every match and are competing and winning against top nationally ranked opponents," commented Racine after the match.
West Florida will take on Xavier on Saturday, March 19 and GSC foe, Delta State on Sunday, March 20 at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The match will begin at 10 AM.
