PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 24 West Florida Women's tennis team had a great match today, defeating XULA 6-1. The Argonauts improve to 6-5 on the season before they take on Delta State on Sunday for their fourth Gulf South Conference match this season.
West Florida showed their dominance today on the courts as they improve to 5-1 on their home court.
The action started in doubles play where the Argonauts came out swinging taking two out of the three matches to come out with the lone point.
"I was very pleased with how both teams played today. Xavier is always a very tough match and it's always very close. In both matches we split the doubles and came down to winning the third doubles to take the doubles point," said head coach
Derrick Racine.
Nathalia Mossambani and her partner
Karolina Silwanowicz got the Argos started off on the right foot with a sweep 6-0 from the No. 1 position.
Mayumi Saguchi and
Sara Yigin came up short from the No. 2 position, falling 4-6 to the Golden Nuggets.
The next victory came from
Irene Recuenco and
Raissa Wagner who won 6-1 from the No. 3 position to give the Argos the lead heading into singles.
Singles play saw the Argonauts build on their early momentum with five of the six positions picking up points on a beautiful day in Pensacola.
"The singles were very tight on pretty much every court but we were able to hang on and pull out victories in all but two of the matches," stated Racine.
Yigin won her match in two straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to secure the first victory for the Argos from the No. 1 position. Saguchi dominated her match from the No. 3 position, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Recuenco continued to show confidence in her performance, winning her match in a close one 7-6, 5-0.
From the bottom of the lineup, Mossambani put up a hard-fought fight, falling 4-6 in the first set, winning the second set 6-3, but she ultimately dropped the match 7-10 in a tiebreaker from the No. 4 position.
Wagner was locked-in from the No. 5 position, she won 6-4, 6-1. From the No. 6 position, Silwanowicz secured more points for the Argos, winning her match 6-2, 6-2.
"This is a great home match to prepare us for the next couple weeks of tough division two opponents," commented Racine.Â
