No. 12 Men's Tennis Remains Undefeated in GSC Play After Defeating Delta State

The Argos are now 4-0 in GSC play

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The #24 West Florida Men's Tennis Team continued to show their dominance on their home court on Sunday as the Argonauts defeated #35 Delta State 5-2. After the match against the Statesmen, the Argonauts improve to 10-2 overall and undefeated in Gulf South Conference play with a 4-0 record.

West Florida remains undefeated on their home courts with a 7-0 home record this season.

In doubles, the Argonauts dominated from all three positions. Tomas Descarrega and Facundo Bermejo teamed up from the No. 1 position, coming away with the win 6-1. This improves their record as a pair to 8-1 on the season.

Pedro Cordeiro and his partner Bernardo Costa sealed the next victory for the Argos, winning their match 6-4 from the No. 3 position. Salvador Bandeira and Albin Ekenros picked up the last doubles victory, winning their match 6-2 giving the Argonauts the advantage heading into singles play.

In singles, Juan Cabrera continued the momentum for West Florida, winning his match in two sets 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 1 position. Costa was locked-in from the No. 3 position winning 6-2, 6-4 to improve his record to 6-2 overall in singles.

Bermejo came away with the win from the No. 2 position, being victorious 7-6, 6-4. In the latest ITA Coaches Poll, Bermejo ranks #36 nationally with a 6-5 singles record.

From the bottom of the lineup, Descarrega secured another point for the Argos winning his match from the No. 4 position 6-1, 6-2. Sebastian Sotelo and Bandeira both fell from the No. 5 and No. 6 position, Sotelo dropped his match 3-6, 1-6 from the No. 5 position and Bandeira put up a strong fight, but lost in the tiebreaker 3-6, 7-6, 5-10 from the No. 6 position.

"The guys match is always a very competitive heated battle and our guys took care of business today sweeping all the doubles and then jumping to leads as we won the first sets on all the top four singles courts," said head tennis coach Derrick Racine. "This wind puts us in a great position in the GSC standings and gives us a chance to continue to compete for the number one seed position in the tournament."

West Florida now looks towards more conference play against Valdosta State at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Tuesday, March 22 at 10 AM.
