West Florida is now 3-1 in GSC play

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The #24 West Florida Women's Tennis Team put on a great performance on Sunday, picking up a huge win against Gulf South Conference opponent, Delta State winning 6-1. The Argonauts improve to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The action started in doubles play where the Argonauts swept from all three positions.

Karolina Silwanowicz and her partner Nathalia Mossambani got the Argos started sweeping their match 6-0 from the No. 1 position. Irene Recuenco and Raissa Wagner picked up the next win from the No. 3 position, winning 6-2.

Sara Yigin and Mayumi Saguchi teamed up from the No. 1 position, pulling out the win 6-2 to help the Argos continue the momentum heading into singles play.

In singles, the Argonauts won five out of the six singles matches to secure the 6-1 victory over the Lady Statesmen.

Recuenco continued the momentum for the Argonauts, winning her match 6-2, 6-0 from the No. 2 position. This fourth straight match Recuenco has won as she improves to 5-5 on singles play for the season.

The next victory came from Saguchi from the No. 3 position, who won 6-4, 6-3. Yigin showed why she was named GSC Player of the Week this past week as she won her match 6-0, 6-2. This improves her overall singles record to 7-2 on the season.

From the bottom half of the lineup, Mossambani and Silwanowicz both picked up wins from the No. 4 and No. 5 position. Mossambani won her match 7-6, 6-4 from the No. 4 position. Silwanowicz dominated her match, winning 6-1, 6-2 from the No. 5 position. Luiza Daud fell from the No. 6 position, dropping her match 3-6, 4-6.

"On the women's side we played a very much improved Delta State team. Once again, the girls jumped to an early 1-0 lead as we swept all three doubles. We won one and two singles fairly easily and then won at #3 & #5. Nathalia Mossambani scraped out a win in a 3rd set tie breaker at #4," commented head tennis coach Derrick Racine after the match.

West Florida now looks towards more conference play against rival Valdosta State at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on Tuesday, March 22. First set will be at 10 AM.
