West Florida Finishes Sweep at Christian Brothers with Big Offense

Argos scored season-high 16 runs in the series finale

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The 19th-ranked University of West Florida softball team cruised to a 16-3 win over Christian Brothers on Sunday afternoon to finish the series sweep over the Lady Bucs. With the win, UWF improved to 14-3 on the year and 9-0 in the Gulf South Conference.

It was a weekend full of great performances, as UWF slugged eight home runs over three games and averaged 11 runs per game. Laurynn Boggs hit .500 and slugged 1.500 with two home runs, nine RBIs and six runs scored, and Madelyn Vasquez also hit .500 with a pair of doubles and a home run. Teala Howard led UWF with five hits and 11 total bases, and she also had two roundtrippers.

In the circle, Kelsey Sweatt finished the weekend with a 1.02 ERA, earning all three of UWF's wins on the weekend with 23 strikeouts over 13.2 innings of work.

On Sunday, West Florida bounced back after an uncharacteristic first inning. The Argonauts allowed three runs to the Lady Bucs, on three errors and not including a wild pitch that allowed CBU's first run of the day to score.

Sweatt entered the game in relief of starter Jeya Prasad after just a third of an inning, and she improved to 8-3 on the year after 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. She struck out five Lady Bucs batters and allowed just one hit.

The UWF offense took hold of the game in the third, with a nine-run inning to take a 9-3 lead, and the team stretched its lead even further in the seven-run sixth.

Laurynn Boggs led things off with a walk and stolen base, before Teala Howard singled to right field. Jessica Ford then tied the game with a three-run blast to center, giving her two home runs on the year.

Madelyn Vasquez then walked and pinch-runner Ayana Powell scored on an Erin Moon double, before Angela Agurkis lifted her third homer of the year to stretch the lead to 6-3 for UWF.

Boggs hit her second home run of the weekend – a three-run shot to left-center – after Morgan Zettle and Mallory Vining each drew a walk, giving West Florida the 9-3 advantage.

In the fifth, Ford drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a double from Vasquez, and Agurkis drove in Vasquez and Kayanna Perez with a double to stretch UWF's lead to 12-3.

Boggs added another two RBIs with a single to center field in the sixth, and Howard drove in two more a batter later, putting West Florida's lead at the final 16-3.

Montana Young threw the final inning for UWF, allowing just one hit but keeping Christian Brothers off the scoreboard.

West Florida will continue its road trip next weekend when the team heads to West Alabama for a three-game set. Fans can keep up with the team by following @UWFSoftball on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
