SAINT LEO, Fla.- In heartbreaking fashion, the No. 27 West Florida Women's Tennis Team dropped their 6-1 match, falling to No. 3 Saint Leo. The Argonauts are now 12-9 with two matches left in the regular season.
West Florida couldn't get the momentum going as they dropped in doubles from all three positions.
Mayumi Saguchi and Guiliana Sacco dropped their match 1-6 as the No. 1 pair.
Karolina Silwanowicz and
Sara Yigin couldn't muster up enough to defeat the Lions, dropping their match 3-6 from the No. 2 position.
Irene Recuenco and her teammate
Raissa Wagner fell just short in their match from the No. 3 positions, falling 4-6 to the Lions.
Heading into singles play, Saguchi won her match 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 3 position to get the Argos first point of the day.
Yigin put up a strong fight, but couldn't defeat her opponent, falling 3-6, 2-6 from the No. 1 position. Recuenco lost the first set 2-6, won the second 6-3, but ultimately fell in the tiebreaker 1-6 from the No. 2 position.
In the final three matches, Silwanowicz, Wagner, and Daud all battled hard, but ultimately came out on the wrong end in each securing the victory for Saint Leo.
"The girls had a tough one and we knew it would be super tough going in. We started slow, but worked out way into the singles matches and competed hard. Mayumi played a great match to get her win," commented head coach
Derrick Racine.
West Florida will be back in action to play Florida Southern on Saturday in Lakeland, Fla. The first set will be at 10 AM (ET). On Sunday, the Argos will take on Hawaii Pacific at 10 AM (ET) in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
