LAKELAND, Fla.- It was a day of great Division II tennis as the No. 27 West Florida Women's Tennis team took down ranked opponent No. 29 Florida Southern 5-2 on Saturday morning. The Argonauts improve to 13-9 on the season entering into their last regular season match on Sunday.
West Florida immediately jumped out on the Mocs, winning two of the three doubles matches to secure the lone point.
"The girls played great doubles today. We mixed things up a bit and I think we finally found our good pairs," said head coach
Derrick Racine.
Sara Yigin and Guiliana Sacco got the ball rolling as the No. 1 pair, winning their match 7-5. The next point would come from
Karolina Silwanowicz and
Mayumi Saguchi, who dominated their match 6-2 from the No. 2 position.
Irene Recuenco and
Raissa Wagner were unable to secure the last point, falling in their match 3-6 as the No. 3 pair.
Heading into singles play, the Argonauts would come out on top in four of the six singles matches to secure the victory over the Mocs.
In dominant fashion, Recuenco was victorious in her match, winning 6-2, 6-0 from the No. 2 position. She improves to 14-9 in singles on the season showing why she deserved to earn Gulf South Conference Player of the Week.
Yigin dropped a heartbreaker to the Mocs, falling in her match in a tiebreaker 7-5, 2-6, 7-10 from the No. 1 position. The next point would come from Saguchi, who won her match 6-3, 7-6 from the No. 3 position to finish out the top of the lineup.
From the bottom half of the lineup, the Argonauts continued to dominate. Silwanowicz was victorious in her match 7-5, 6-4 from the No. 5 position.
Luiza Daud couldn't come out with a victory from the No. 6 position, falling 4-6, 0-6.
Wagner was able to claim the victory in her match 6-4, 6-3 from the No. 5 position to help secure the victory for the Argos.
"In singles, the girls continued the momentum and got some big wins. It's always a tough battle with the girls against Florida Southern," noted Racine.
On Sunday, the Argos will take on Hawaii Pacific at 10 AM (ET) in Altamonte Springs, Fla for their last match of the regular season.
