LAKELAND, Fla.- The No. 8 West Florida Men's Tennis team swept the No. 22 Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon 7-0. This improves the Argonauts to 17-5 on the season heading into their last match before postseason play begins.
This would make the Argonauts eighth sweep of the season
. West Florida came out strong from the beginning, winning all the doubles points to secure the victory over the Mocs.
Facundo Bermejo and
Tomas Descarrega got things started for the Argonauts, winning their match 6-2 from the No. 1 position. As a pair, they are now 14-3 on the season and 37
th in the country.
"The guys played great doubles at #1 & #3 to give us the doubles point," said head coach
Derrick Racine.
Bernardo Costa and
Pedro Cordeiro would secure the final doubles point for the Argonauts, winning their match 6-3 as the No. 3 pair.
In singles, the Argos claimed victory in all singles matches to secure the win.
Juan Cabrera showed why he was Gulf South Conference Player of the Week this week after his stellar performance. Cabrera won a close match 7-6, 7-6, and then won the tiebreaker 4-3 from the No. 1 position. He now improves to 17-3 on the season heading into the final match of regular season.
Costa found a way to win in his match from the No. 3 position, he was victorious 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. The next point from the top of the lineup would come from Bermejo, who won his match 6-4, 6-3 from the No. 2 position.
The Argos claimed the rest of the points from the bottom half of the lineup, dominating from all three positions.
Bandeira came out with the victory, winning his match in a tiebreaker 7-5, 6-7, 10-6 from the No. 4 position.
Albin Ekenros showed out from the No. 6 position, dominating his match 6-4, 6-4. Cordiero would claim the last point to secure the victory for the Argos 7-5, 6-4 from the No. 5 position.
After the match, Racine noted, "We dominated all singles matches with first set victories and then finished off the matches. Our #3 & #4 singles went to three sets, but our guys held tough and showed their grit."
On Sunday, the Argos will take on Hawaii Pacific at 10 AM (ET) in Altamonte Springs, Fla for their last match of the regular season.
