ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.- The No. 8 West Florida Men's Tennis Team dropped a tough match to the No. 7 ranked 4-2 on Sunday morning to end the regular season. The Argos finish the regular season with a 17-6 overall record. The Sharks are 14-1 as they head out west to finish their regular season.
West Florida couldn't pull out a win in doubles as they dropped two matches and the other went unfinished due to the Sharks securing the lone point.
Salvador Bandeira and
Lluis Miralles Miro came in as the No. 2 pair, but they ultimately dropped their match 6-3 to the Sharks.
Bernardo Costa and
Pedro Cordeiro couldn't defeat the Sharks as they fell 6-4 from the No. 3 position.
As the 37
th duo in the nation,
Facundo Bermejo and
Tomas Descarrega's match went unfinished due to the Sharks being victorious in doubles.
In singles, the Argos were able to win two singles matches with three matches going into a tiebreaker. Bermejo was able to defeat his opponent 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 2 position. He improves to 14-4 as the 21
st player in the nation.
Juan Cabrera fell in a competitive match, dropping the first set 6-1, winning the second 6-3, but ultimately falling in the tiebreaker 6-1 from the No. 1 position against the No. 2 player in the nation Jordi Walder.
Bandeira was unable to win his match from the No. 4 position, falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Cordeiro couldn't continue the momentum and dropped his match 7-6, 6-1 from the No. 5 position. The final point in singles would come from
Lluis Miralles Miro, who won his match 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 from the No. 6 position.
Costa's match from the No. 3 position went unfinished due to the Sharks being victorious.
"It was a super tough battle for the guys today. Just the match we needed to get us ready for GSC postseason play. Every match was super tough and a physical battle. Hawaii Pacific will be #1 or #2 in the new national ranking and the match was as close as it can be. This gives us a lot of confidence that we can compete with any team in the nation," said head coach
Derrick Racine.
The Argos will have a few more weeks to prepare as they get ready for the Gulf South Conference Tournament from April 28-30 in Montgomery, Ala.
