West Florida Takes Down Mississippi College to Advance to GSC Tournament Semifinals

The Argos will take on the No. 3 seed West Alabama in the semifinals

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The West Florida Men's Tennis Team started the 2022 Gulf South Conference Tournament on a strong note on Thursday morning as the Argos swept Mississippi College 4-0 in the quarterfinals. This win advances the No.1 seeded Argonauts to the semifinals of the tournament on Friday morning where they will face the No. 4 seed West Alabama.

From the beginning, UWF dominated on the courts with two wins in doubles to secure the lone point over the Choctaws.

Lluis Miralles Miro and Salvador Bandeira got things started for the Argonauts, winning their match 6-2 as the No. 2 pair. Pedro Cordeiro and Bernardo Costa would claim the next point 6-3 from the No. 3 position. Facundo Bermejo and his partner Tomas Descarrega's match as the No. 1 pair would go unfinished due to the Argos securing the doubles point.

In the singles portion of today's match, West Florida secured victories from the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 positions to see the Argonauts advance further into the tournament.

Bermejo would see the first singles victory for the Argos as he defeated his opponent in two straight sets 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 2 position. Sebastian Sotelo was victorious from the No. 4 position as he took down Carlos Trujllo 6-2, 6-1. Miro would claim the last point of the day for the Argos as he won 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 6 position.

While the remaining three matches all went unfinished, the Argonauts held the leads from the No. 1 and No. 5 positions.

Juan Cabrera almost claimed his match from the No. 1 position as he was ahead 6-2, 2-3 when the match concluded. Cordeiro was holding a steady lead before the match ended, having the advantage over his opponent 7-6, 1-0 from the No. 5 position.

Descarrega was falling short in his match to Hsiang Yi Wang 6-4, 3-0 from the No. 3 position before the match ended and the Argonauts secured the victory.

After the match, head coach Derrick Racine said, "We are ready for a big semifinal match tomorrow. West Alabama has got a very solid team, but we've beaten them once already this year, but it was a very tough grind so we know it's going to be a tough challenge. I feel like the boys are ready to play."

UWF will take on UWA at O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala on Friday morning. The first serve is set for 10 AM (CT).

Friday's winner will move to the Championship match scheduled for Saturday where they will face off with the winner of the Valdosta State vs. Delta State match which is tomorrow as well.
