PENSACOLA, Fla.- It was a great day for the West Florida Women's Tennis Team as they took down two Gulf South Conference opponents. The first match of the day was against Christian Brothers, where the Argos defeated the Buccaneers 5-2. In their second match of the day, the Argonauts swept West Georgia 7-0. After today's matches, the Argonauts improve to 10-7 overall and 6-1 in GSC play.
To start off the day, the Argonauts won two out of the three doubles matches to take the lone point heading into singles play.
Guilanna Sacco and
Karolina Silwanowicz teamed up as the No. 1 pair, but ended up 3-6.
Irene Recuenco and
Raissa Wagner would secure the first doubles point for the Argos as the No. 2 pair, winning their match 6-2.
Mayumi Saguchi and
Sara Yigin picked up the second point in doubles as they clinched the win 7-6 from the No. 2 position.
The momentum continued for the Argonauts as they secured wins from four out of the six matches.
From the top of the lineup, Saguchi fell short in the first set 1-6, won the second set 6-4, and clinched the tiebreaker 7-5 from the No. 3 position. The Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, Recuenco won her match 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. This improves Recuenco to 10-5 in singles and 4-3 in the conference.
Yigin fought hard in her match, but ended up dropping 5-7, 6-7 from the No. 1 position.
From the bottom of the lineup, Silwanowicz won a great match against the Buccaneers 2-5, 6-2, 6-4 from the No. 4 position. Wagner dominated her match from the No. 5 position, winning in two straight set 6-3, 6-2. In the last match against CBU,
Luiza Daud put up a strong fight, but dropped 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 6 position.
"The women played a great couple of matches today and improved their record in GSC play. We have a tough match tomorrow and then next weekend we will close out conference play with tough matches against UM and shorter. The girls are in position to finish number two in the conference if they can win out their last three matches." commented head coach

The UWF Women's Tennis Team will be back in action at home tomorrow to face Mississippi College at 1 PM.
