PENSACOLA, Fla.- The West Florida Women's Tennis Team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 match at home to #30 Auburn Montgomery on Friday afternoon.
UWF has their three-match winning streak snapped as they fall to 11-8 on the season and 7-2 in GSC play. Meanwhile, the Warhawks improve to 12-5 and 6-0 in GSC play.
The Argonauts faltered in doubles action, dropping two out of the three matches. Guilanna Sacco and
Mayumi Saguchi teamed up from the No. 1 position, falling 2-6 to 39
th ranked Estefania Garcia and Sofia Navarro from AUM.
Irene Recuenco and
Raissa Wagner were able to get the only point for the Argos in doubles, winning their match 6-1 as the No. 3 pair.
Karolina Silwanowicz and her partner
Sara Yigin dropped a tough match 3-6 from the No. 2 position.
West Florida was able to rebound in singles, winning three of the six matches. The Warhawks already secured the lone point in doubles to win the match.
To start off singles, Yigin got the Argos back on track, being victorious 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 1 position. Recuenco secured the next point, defeating the 22
nd ranked Estefania Garcia in a tough battle 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 2 position.
Saguchi was able to win the next and final point for the Argonauts in an intense match 6-4, 6-4 from the No. 3 position.
From the bottom half of the lineup, Silwanowicz put up a strong fight, but fell just short 4-6, 4-6 from the No. 4 position. Wagner wasn't able to get the victory from the No. 5 position, dropping her match 5-7, 2-6.
This left the match in the hands of
Luiza Daud, who lost the first set 2-6 and won the second set 6-4. This led the match into a tiebreaker, where Daud fell in a close set 2-6 from the No. 6 position.
"The women played a great match today as well. We came up a little short in the doubles, but fought super hard in the singles, but came up just short to lose 4-3. I think this match gives us a lot of confidence in how we're playing and belief that we have a great chance to beat any of these teams if we continue to compete hard," commented head coach
Derrick Racine.
The Argonauts will be back at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex for more GSC action against Shorter tomorrow morning at 10 AM.
