MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- The No. 4 seeded West Florida Men's Tennis Team dominated the court against No. 5 seeded Valdosta State 4-3 as the Argos took down the Blazers for the third time this season. The Argonauts will advance to the South Regional Finals on Tuesday, May 10 against the No. 1 seeded Barry.
From the start of the match, West Florida got the ball rolling in doubles, winning two of the three doubles matches to secure the lone point.
Salvador Bandeira and
Lluis Miralles Miro won the first point for the Argos, as they dominated their match 6-4 from the No. 2 position.
Facundo Bermejo and
Tomas Descarrega would get the next point, winning their match 6-4 as the No. 1 pair against the No. 1 doubles team in the nation Luca Mack and Rodrigo Carvalho. As a pair, Bermejo and Descarrega improve to 16-4 on the season and are currently ranked No. 18 in the country.
Pedro Cordeiro and
Bernardo Costa's match would go unfinished due to the Argos securing the doubles point, the pair was down 5-4 from the No. 3 position when the match concluded.
In singles, the Argos relied heavily on the bottom half of the lineup to get the win over the Blazers.
From the top of the lineup, Descarrega would end up falling in his match 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 3 position against Lamar Bartley. Bermejo dropped his match to No. 48 Rodrigo Carvalho 6-3, 6-3 from the No. 2 position.
Juan Cabrera would end up losing a close match to the No. 9 player in the nation Luca Mack 7-6, 6-1 from the No. 1 position. The last time these two players met up, the match went unfinished due to the Argos winning the match.
Sebastian Sotelo would get the first singles point for the Argos as he won his match in two sets 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 5 position. The next point would come from Cordeiro, who won his match 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 6 position.
The match was tied up 3-3 leaving it in the hands of
Salvador Bandeira to win the match for the Argos. Bandeira lost the first set 7-5 and won the second 6-2, which led the match to go into a tiebreaker. Bandeira won the tiebreaker 6-4 to seal the win for the Argos to advance to the NCAA South Regional Finals against Barry.
"It was a great match for the guys, it was very hot and that makes it a physical grind. The bottom of our lineup came through good matches all around. Salvador stepped up and performed clinching the final point," commented head coach
Derrick Racine after the match.
"We have another tough match against Barry tomorrow, the guys are ready and this match gets us one step closer to our goal of winning the whole thing," said Racine.
The Argonauts will take on the Buccaneers at the Buccaneer Tennis Center at 10 AM (ET) on Tuesday, May 10.
The winner of the match tomorrow will advance to the Men's Tennis NCAA Division II National Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. from May 17-21.
