Box Score PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla.- The West Florida Men's Soccer team lost a tough fight to Saint Leo on Saturday night. After ninety minutes of play, the Argonauts were unable to come back falling to the Lions 1-0. Saint Leo improves to 2-0-0 to start the season while the Argos fall to 1-1-0.
The first half saw a lot of back and forth action between both teams.The Argos outshot the Lions 8-5 in the first half with shots including a few shots from
Caue Novaes,
Kainan Dos Santos, and
Josiah Fontenot. UWF had trouble getting the ball into the net.
The single goal came from Saint Leo's Tyler Velazquez, who found the left side of the net in the 30
th minute. The assist was given to Lucas Mastroguiseppe.
Despite the 1-0 deficit, the Argo backline was able to hold steady to not allow any more goals from the strong Saint Leo offense led by forward Jurgen Mendez and Noah Kvifte.
At the half, the Argos remained down by one looking to pick up the momentum in the second half.
The second half included back and forth offensive possessions by both teams. Saint Leo's goalkeeper Ricardo Ceballos recorded one save the whole game to keep the Argos at bay.Â
Leading scorer Dos Santos had the most shots for the Argos with a total of five. The Lions tallied eight total shots in the game while West Florida accumulated twelve.
The backline of the defense was like a brick wall holding the Lions to only three shots in the second half which was led by senior captain
Lucas Barankiewicz and
Furkan Artar. Although the Argos held Saint Leo on both sides of the ball during the second half, it was not enough to come away with the win.
