BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – The sixth-ranked UWF men's golf team opened the 2022-23 season with a strong 6-shot victory at the Griffin Invitational on Tuesday.
Â
UWF shot a 16-under-par, 848 total to outdistance the 13-team field at Southern Hills Golf Club. Second-ranked Barry finished in second place at 854 and 15th-ranked Nova Southeastern was third at 860.
Â
The team victory was the first for the Argonauts since April 2021 when they won the Gulf South Conference Championship.
Â
On Tuesday, UWF opened with a 6-stroke advantage and it proved large enough for the majority of the day. Just after the turn though, the lead stood at just one shot as Barry moved to 10-under and UWF was at 11-under. But the Argos responded by playing the final eight holes at 5-under to pull away. A big push for the large margin came when
Elias Haavisto and
Ethan Unverzagt both birdied their 18th hole of the round, Nos. 1 and 2 respectively.
Â
Leading the way for UWF was the group of Haavisto,
Felipe Garces and
Cameron Bonner. They all finished in the top 10 and had all three rounds count towards the daily team score.
Â
Haavisto and Garces tied for second at 6-under, 210. Haavisto posted the low final round in the tournament, making seven birdies and three bogeys on his way to a 68. Garces shot an even par on Tuesday. He was particularly efficient on the par 5s this week, playing the four longest holes on the course a combined 10-under over his three rounds.
Â
Bonner tallied a ninth-place finish with a 1-under, 215 following a final round 76.
Â
Unverzagt tied for 15th at 73-76-69=218 and Maxwell Page was 26th at 69-75-77=221 to round out the team competitors for UWF.
Â
Nicolas Rubio was entered as an individual and posted a 71-73-74=218 and a tie for 15th.
Â
The Argonauts will return to action next Monday and Tuesday when they compete in the Mizuno Intercollegiate, hosted by North Georgia at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Georgia.
