Pensacola Fla. --- The University of West Florida women's soccer team completed the weekend undefeated after taking down West Georgia 1-0 in home conference game.
Â
The Wolves (4-3 overall, GSC 2-1) came out with a mission as their communication and aggression seemed to take the Argos (5-2-1 overall, 3-1 GSC) off-guard as it was a frenetic match from both sides throughout the beginning minutes. The Wolves got on the board first at the 11-minute mark from an Argo foul that occurred in the box.
Â
Despite being down 1-0 early, the Argos were slowly able to control the game as they earned a corner kick and found opportunities to take five shots compared to the Wolves one in the following 17 minutes.
Â
It would be
Blair Cowan to uplift the Argos as she received the ball from
Ahnalie Layman with her back towards the goal to then use her touch to turn into shooting position and find the opening past the goalkeeper to even the score 1-1. Cowan has now scored in back-to-back games and is fourth in the conference in goals with five.
Â
The Argos began to gain momentum even with the possession changing and the pressure at a constant high as they stopped the Wolves from getting any shots on target to finish the first half after balancing the score. But before the half would end, the Argos felt unfinished as
Julia Comin threw a quick throw in to
Kileigh Whited on the run down the flank to hit a cross in the middle of the box to
Manami Okada who was able to get a head on it find the back of the net.
Â
"We fell behind early. The mentality needed to improve and it did as we were able to grind," said head coach
Joe Bartlinski.
Â
Blair and Okada sit together at sixth and seventh in the GSC in game-winning goals – two in eight games.
Â
The second half remaining scoreless but the ball was possessed better as the Argos were able to collect and find their groove as they sensed the openings easier and took advantage of it.
Â
The Argos outshot the Wolves 16-6 with a slight 3-1 advantage with on target shots.
Â
"It was a week of hard work. They got after it this week and was able to get to that next level."
Â
After a successful 2-0 weekend, the Argos jump to three in the GSC rankings behind West Alabama and Montevallo.
Â
The Argos will head on the road to Tennessee next weekend to take on Union Friday, Sep. 23 at 5:00 p.m. and Christian Brothers Sunday, Sep. 25 at 1:00 p.m. in week three of regular season conference play.
