UWF Blows Through Eckerd 5-0

Pensacola, Fla. --- The University of West Florida women's soccer team took down Eckerd Tritons 5-0 in Friday afternoon's home game to stay undefeated and advance 2-0-1.

Game leaders Blair Cowan and Brianna Pope took control of the game up top as Cowan received a hat trick (two goals from penalty kicks) and Pope contributing two goals. In the 23rd minute, Cowan made an Eckerd player commit a foul in the box to easily put it away bottom left.

Only four minutes after, Pope attacked the left side with aggression and pace. Just before taking a shot, defender Abby Ripple of the Tritons tackled down Pope with an illegal slide inside the box – Cowan took the penalty to advance the Argos 2-0.

Down the left middle with a perfect pass from Destiny Hird in the back line, Pope out dribbled the Tritons defense to cut to the right side and juke out the goalkeeper to calmly find the back of the net.

Entering the second half with a 3-0 lead, Pope did not let up. Just two minutes in, a shot by Pope to the bottom left was saved to give the Argos their third corner kick. Maintaining possession on their attacking half, Alyssa Wilson hit a pass on the ground from the left side that went through the crowd for an easy touch in by Pope to get her second goal of the night.

The Argos possessed 53% to the Tritons 47%.

In the 49th minutes and coming all the way from the Argos defensive box, Maciah Lipsey punted the ball to the half to allow the team to simply connect two passes to get their fifth and final goal of the night. Just in front of the goal, Mya Swinton assisted Cowan who found the bottom left open to get the first hat trick of the season. Cowan took three shots which all game on goal and ended in the back of the net.

Freshman Mia Ferkranus played her first minutes in the net as she came in the second half for Lipsey to finish out the game. Lipsey played 55 minutes with Ferkranus playing the remaining 35 to get their third shutout.
