The sixth-ranked UWF Argonauts host the Delta State Statesmen in the GSC opener for both teams. The game, which is being presented by Publix, is the first on-campus GSC contest in program history.
ABOUT UWF
* UWF comes into the GSC opener for both teams at 2-0 and ranked No. 6 in the country. The Argonauts have outscored their opponents a combined 101-13 (55.5-6.5).
* UWF is averaging 409.5 yards per game with 249.5 through the air and 180 on the ground. The eye-popping number is the 8.81 yards per play that leads the country.
* Junior QB Peewee Jarrett has converted 61 percent of his passes and is ranked first in the country with a 243.8 passer efficiency rating. He also leads D2 with 23.1 passing yards per completion and 14.1 yards per attempt.
* The UWF rushing attack has been as stout as ever, churning out 160 yards per game with 6.3 yards per rush to rank seventh nationally.
* On defense, the Argonauts have forced four turnovers while yielding just one touchdown over eight quarters.
ABOUT DELTA STATE
* Delta State is also unbeaten, sitting at 3-0 with three road victories to start the season. The Statesmen have defeated Kentucky State (33-10), McKendree (58-34) and Division I FCS Mississippi Valley State (28-17).
* The Statesmen are totaling 430.7 yards per contest, with a very balanced attack - 238.7 passing and 192.0 rushing.
* QB Patrick Shegog is ninth in the country with a 66 percent completion percentage and 14th with 16.4 yards per completion.
SERIES HISTORY
* UWF leads the all-time series, 3-2, which includes a 1-1 mark in Pensacola. Last season the Statesmen grabbed a 30-10 halftime lead in Cleveland before the Argos outscored them 29-3 for a 39-33 victory, completing the largest comeback in program history. In the last game on the Emerald Coast, UWF scored the first 41 points as it dominated DSU with a 48-3 Homecoming rout that featured 27 points in the second half while holding the visitors to 217 yards of total offense.
EFFICIENT ARGOS
* UWF has run 93 plays and averaged 8.8 yards per play, placing the squad first in the country up to this point.
* A year ago, UWF led the country in yards per play, churning out 7.75 yards from scrimmage. Much of that was due to the fact that the Argos set the school's single-game record three times – putting up 8.3 at McNeese, 9.3 against Shorter and a monster number of 10.9 at Mississippi College.Â
GSC-READY SINCE 2016
* From year one, UWF head coach Pete Shinnick preached that the Argos needed to be 'GSC ready' because of the fierce competition that existed in the league on a yearly basis.
* The Blue & Green have done just that, posting the second-most conference wins in the last five seasons.Â
