JACKSON, Tenn.- West Florida Men's Soccer Team started the weekend in Tennessee off strong with a Gulf South Conference win over Union 2-1 on Friday evening.
The Argonauts improve to 4-2-1 and 2-0-1 in GSC play while the Bulldogs fall to 3-6 and 1-4 in GSC play on the season.
The first half saw back and forth action between both teams. Forward
Kainan Dos Santos led the offensive charge for the Argos as he had three shots with all three being shots on goal.
Midfielder
Tom Preston had two shots while
Keegan Ancelin tallied four shots. In the first half, the Argos recorded ten shots to the Bulldogs five.
Lucas Barankiewicz and
Keegan Lynch held up the backline of the Argo defense as UWF only allowed the Bulldogs sevens shots in the game. Goalkeeper
Nicolas Meckien was in the net and had two saves to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
West Florida scored twice late in the first half to get the momentum going before heading into halftime.
Jack Patching would claim the first goal for the Argos in the 40
th minute as his shot went into the lower left corner of the net. The assist was given to
Fynn Geigle.
The next goal would come in the 42
nd minute when Dos Santos sent a rocket inside the lower right post. This marks Dos Santos's third goal of the season.
The Argonauts went into the half with the momentum being up 2-0.
In the second half, the Argonauts only had two shots in the half and held the Bulldogs to only two. The Argonauts tallied 6-5 corner kicks to Union.
Union goalkeeper Botond Nemeth had quite a night for the Bulldogs as he recorded six saves.
The Bulldogs got on the board late in the second half with a shot and goal by Ostian Bowen in the 87
th minute. The goal wasn't enough to take down the Argonauts. At the end of regulation, the score remained 2-1.
The Argonauts will travel to Memphis, Tennessee to take on Christian Brothers on Sunday, Sept. 26 for what will be another great Sunday of Gulf South Conference men's soccer. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (CT).
