Argonauts Travel to Alabama to Start GSC Play

UWF will play UAH on Friday and UWA on Sunday

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The West Florida Men's Soccer team hits the road for a busy weekend to start Gulf South Conference play. The Argonauts will face Alabama Huntsville on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and West Alabama on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Week Recap

West Florida (2-2) kicked off the week with a strong 4-0 win over Pensacola Christian with 22 Argonauts stepping onto the field. West Florida outshot the Eagles with a margin of 25-1 and had 11 shots on goal.

Forward Keegan Ancelin made his first two goals of the season against the Eagles. The Jacksonville native was named Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year and was the second leading scorer for the Argos in goals (11), points (23), and shots (26) last season. Another key asset to this Argos offense is Kendrick Hernandez, who made his collegiate debut against Tampa on 8/25. Hernandez made his first goal against the Spartans and has continued to contribute to the Argos success by scoring his second goal against the Eagles.

Forward Kainan Dos Santos brings experience to this team by leading in goals (13), points (30), and shots (48) last year. During the 2022 campaign, Dos Santos has started all four games this season and is the third highest scorer for the Argos with two.

The backline of the defense has been the name of the game for this Argo team with Lucas Barankiewicz and Furkan Artar leading the campaign. UWF Goalkeeper A.J. Evans recorded eight saves with three goals allowed to start the 2022 season.

The Argos have out shot their opponent 68-26 and have tallied 2.00 goals per game.

The game against Rollins saw the Argonauts struggling to get the ball into the net with Argos out shooting the Tars 20-7. The Tars tallied six saves to the Argos three saves. UWF recorded 11 corner kicks while the Tars had one. Rollins ended up coming out on top, winning the match 2-1 with their second goal coming in the 81st minute by Patrick Horan.

The Argonauts look to get after it as they enter GSC play this weekend.

Scouting the Opponents

Alabama Huntsville Chargers

The Chargers are 0-3-1 as they tied Eckerd 1-1 on Sept. 4th as forward Xavier Martin scored the Chargers lone goal in the game.
The UAH offense is led by four players, Aaron Chasez, Charlie Garrison, Shaley Keter, and Martin. UAH goalkeeper Giancario Martinez has made all four starts for the Chargers, tallying 2.57 goals against average, and .550 save percentage with over 315 minutes of play.

The Chargers will start GSC play against the Argos on Friday and then take on Spring Hill on Sunday.

Last season, the Chargers were ranked 9th in the GSC, finishing with a 4-6-1 record with wins over Delta State and Union.

Argos vs. Chargers History

In their last matchup, the Argos lost a heartbreaker to the Chargers 2-1 in overtime. UAH scored quickly with a goal by Deivi Bucio in the 8th minute. UWF evened the score when Jacob Tankersley found the net in the 41st minute. Both teams remained scoreless in the second half leading the game to head into overtime. In the 102nd minute, UAH midfielder Connor Young scored the golden goal to win the game 2-1.

In the last 10 matchups against the Chargers, the Argos have gone 13-6-3 overall with a home record of 8-1-1 and away record of 3-4-1.

Scouting the Opponents

West Alabama Tigers

West Alabama (0-2-1) will open conference play with their first home opener against the Argos. The Tigers took a loss on the road at Saint Leo 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 4. The Tigers outshot the Lions 10-7 with eight of those shots coming in the second half. UWA goalkeeper Harry Deveney recorded five saves in total. Deveney has tallied 172 minutes this season with three goals allowed and nine saves.

Midfielder Harry Colville has started and played all three games for the Tigers. Colville leads UWA in goals (1), points (2), and shots (5) with the one goal in the game against Carson Newman.

Last season, the Tigers finished 5-6 in the conference and lost to Auburn Montgomery 1-0 in the second round of the GSC Tournament.

Head coach Ross Nelson is in his third year at the helm of the UWA Men's Soccer Team.

Argos vs. West Alabama History

UWF had a big second half performance to defeat UWA 4-2 last season. Two of those goals came from Dos Santos in the 53rd minute off a penalty kick and 80th minute right outside the box. Goalkeeper Jihad Gomes had five saves to limit the Tigers to one goal. The Argos outshot the Tigers with a margin of 17-7 with each team tallying seven shots on goals.

Up Next: West Florida will travel on the road to play UAH on Friday at 7:30 PM and UWA on Sunday at 3:30 PM.
