CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Jaclyn Jarnot scored 22 points and
Zoe Piller scored seven of her 19 in a crucial stretch late in the game to push the UWF women's basketball team to a 76-68 win over No. 13/22 Lee at Walker Arena on Thursday.
UWF won its fifth-consecutive game and improved to 10-5 overall and 10-3 in the Gulf South Conference. For Lee, it snapped the Lady Flames' 11-game winning streak and dropped them to 14-3 and 12-1.
UWF fought through first quarter foul trouble to Jarnot and
Jaden Langford but still managed to find themselves tied at 15 following the opening 10 minutes.
The Argonauts used a pair of 6-0 runs in the second quarter to grab a 37-27 lead at the half.
The third quarter got called very tight on both ends of the floor, with the teams combining for 12 fouls and 15 free throws. Despite the numerous stoppages, UWF managed to extend its lead to 12.
The Lady Flames fought back and took the lead with a 15-0 run, gaining the momentum at 58-57 with 5:08 to play. But then Piller came alive and scored the next seven points in the contest, giving the Argos a 64-58 lead with 3:30 left.
Piller added another layup off a
Haylee Luttrell miss to put UWF ahead 66-61 before the team made 10-of-12 at the free throw line down the stretch, including eight in the final minute to split the season series.
"I was proud of our team for thriving in the big moments and hitting clutch free throws," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "The way we played through adversity with early foul trouble and we had some kids who hadn't played many minutes step up and give us big minutes. We played like the Grinch tonight in that we've been playing with heart all season but our heart grew three sizes tonight."
Moriah Taylor had 14 points and Luttrell added 11. The Argos made six 3-pointers and were on fire at the foul line, making 26-of-31 at the stripe.
The Argos shot 51 percent and outrebounded the opposition 40-23.
Haley Schubert had a career-high 35 to lead the Lady Flames, who shot 39 percent and was just 6-of-26 from outside.
