UWF Hosts West Georgia on Wednesday

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Riding an 8-game winning streak and winners of 11 of their last 12, the UWF women's basketball team wraps up a 3-game homestand with a contest against West Georgia on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. The Argonauts will then begin a 4-game road trip with a trip to Mobile on Saturday where they will face Spring Hill at 2 p.m.
 
ABOUT UWF
* UWF ran its winning streak to eight games with a pair of victories over Delta State and Mississippi College last week. The streak is the longest since winning 10-straight near the start of last season. The streak is currently tied for the 13th-longest active stretch in the country.
* The Argos have won six of their eight games during the streak by double digits and are outscoring the opposition, 72.3-54.6.
 

D2SIDA SOUTH REGION RANKING
* UWF is ranked seventh in this week's Division 2 Sports Information Directors of America South Region ranking.
* The Argos are up a spot from last week and just behind No. 6 Union and No. 5 Valdosta State.
* As for the NCAA Regional Rankings, those will begin in three weeks on Wednesday, Feb. 15, with Teams Under Consideration listed in alphabetical order.. The second and third weeks will show the teams in ranked order 1-10.
* The NCAA Selection Show is Sunday, Mar. 5 at 9 pm CT on ncaa.com.


GOING STREAKING
* UWF's 8-game winning streak is tied for the 13th-longest active streak in Division 2, while the 8-game conference run is also tied for 13th.

ANOTHER DOUBLE-DIGIT CONFERENCE WIN TOTAL
* UWF has 13 GSC victories thus far, marking the seventh time in the last nine years to hit double-digits.
* It had only been done seven times total in the 19 previous seasons.

WIN STREAK REACHES 8, SIXTH-LONGEST IN PROGRAM HISTORY

* UWF has 8-consecutive wins, ranking as the sixth-longest streak in UWF women's basketball history. In 1998-99, the Argos won 15-consecutive before falling in the GSC Tournament; A year earlier, the 1997-98 team that started 17-1, reeled off 14-straight after a 3-1 start; The 2018-19 squad won the final 13 regular-season games for No. 3 on the list, just ahead of the 10-straight last season and nine by the 2005-06 team.

42ND SEASON OF UWF WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

* UWF enters the weekend with 620 all-time wins dating back 40-plus years to the inaugural season of 1981-82. The Argonauts are 620-531 all-time with six NCAA Tournament appearances, one Elite Eight, four GSC Regular-Season Championships and one GSC tourney title in 19 appearances.

* In 29 seasons of NCAA/GSC membership, the program is 267-196 for a .575 winning pct., ranking fifth among current members and third among those that have been in the league for at least 10 seasons.

YELTON IN 11TH SEASON AT UWF
* Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her 11th season at UWF and has a 181-119 (.601) record with the Argos … She is 237-203 (.537) in her 16th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern.
* She has seven winning seasons in her 10 previous years at UWF.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
* She is 15-10 against West Georgia and 8-2 against SHC.
* The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the 1994 title game.

* Stephanie Lawrence Yelton moved into second place on the UWF women's basketball coaching victories list a few weeks ago, notching her 176th win. She is now just three wins away from owning the record.

ABOUT WEST GEORGIA
* UWG is 7-11 this season and has lost its last three games to drop to 6-9 in the GSC, sitting in a 3-way tie for seventh place.
* The Wolves are shooting 36.5 percent on the season and are 6-2 when they shoot 40 percent or better and 0-9 when they are below the 40 percent mark.
* Junior Stephanie Torres leads the team in scoring and has nine games in double figures. Freshman Aliyah Washington contributes 9.3 ppg and has averaged 11.1 in the last seven.Senior Peace Okeke leads the team inside with 8.7 rebounds per game and 21 blocks, including six in the last three contests.
* Joanna Reitz is in her first season as the UWG head coach. This is her first head coaching position after five seasons at Utah with previous coaching stints at USC-Aiken (assistant coach – 2015-17), Mercer (assistant coach – 2013-15), Shorter (assistant coach – 2011-13) and as the Director of Recruiting Operations at Florida State (2010-11). She spent three additional seasons with the Seminoles as a graduate assistant from 2007-10. 

SERIES HISTORY WITH UWG
* UWF is 36-27 against UWG dating back to the first meeting in 1989-90. The Argos are 14-8 in Pensacola since 2001. 
* The Argos are 10-5 in the last 15 games, with the magic number being 63. UWF is 10-0 when scoring at least 63 points and 0-5 when not.
* UWF has won the last six against UWG, including the first meeting this season, 77-49, in Carrollton. UWF shot 53 percent in the contest and outscored the Wolves 24-10 in the third quarter, and 44-21 after halftime. Zoe Piller led the Argos with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting as she added eight rebounds and four steals. Jaclyn Jarnot had 13 points and 15 boards. Moriah Taylor was on fire early, scoring 13 of her 15 points in the first half, making all three of her triples in that span. She also finished with seven assists.

UWF PICKED 4TH IN GSC COACHES POLL, JARNOT NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* UWF was picked to finish fourth in the GSC Preseason Coaches Poll … UWF earned 107 poll points and was behind Union, Lee and Valdosta State in the top three spots, respectively. That trio earned 12 of the 13 first place votes. The remaining vote went to Alabama Huntsville despite being picked tenth by the consensus. Christian Brothers, Mississippi College and West Alabama were the remaining ones in the upper half, followed in order by Delta State, Montevallo, UAH, West Georgia, Auburn Montgomery and Shorter.
* Senior Jaclyn Jarnot was named to the 5-member preseason all-GSC squad. She returns for her final go-around as an Argonaut following a First Team All-GSC and All-Region season a year ago. In 2021-22, the Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native averaged 17.4 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, while recording 18 double-doubles in 25 games. Her rebounding avg. and double-double totals were each fifth nationally in Division 2.
