Argos Return Home For Battle With West Alabama and UAH

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Riding a 2-game winning streak and six of their last eight overall, the UWF women's basketball team returns to the UWF Field House for a pair of home contests this weekend. UWF plays host to West Alabama on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Alabama Huntsville on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
ABOUT UWF
* After a 1-3 start to the season, UWF has gone 6-2 and sits at 7-5 overall. Of the team's last three losses, they have included a 4-point OT loss to Lee, a 4-point road loss to Mississippi College, a 3-point road loss to Columbus St. and a 4-point loss to Valdosta State. UWF is in fourth place in the GSC at 7-3.
* UWF has combined for 17 3-pointers in the last two games, connecting on nine at Montevallo and eight at AUM, the team's top two figures this season.
 
JARNOT CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
* UWF senior Jaclyn Jarnot has improved in just about every statistical category from a year ago. She enters the UWA/UAH weekend with 17.6 points and 13.3 rebounds per game while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 41 percent from outside. She is fourth in the NCAA in rebounds per game and second in defensive rebounds at 10.3.
* She has posted a double-double in 10 of 12 games, which lead the conference and is second nationally.
* She is the only player in the GSC to rank in the top five of scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, 3-point FG percentage, blocks per game and steals per game. She is also eighth in assists per game.
* She averaged a double-double on Saturday and Monday, with 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in a road sweep of Montevallo and AUM, helping UWF move into fourth place in the league standings. She shot 43 percent for the week. Capped things off with a career-high five 3-pointers at AUM where she had 12 of her game-high 21 in the second half. Continues to be a dominant player in the league, averaging 17.6 points and a GSC-best 13.3 rebounds per contest.
* She was named the Division 2 Women's Basketball National Player of the Week and the GSC Player of the Week the second week of December. She averaged 28.5 points and 18.0 rebounds in a pair of victories over then-No. 5 Union and Christian Brothers. She had 24 points and 16 boards with three 3-pointers against the previously undefeated Bulldogs before posting a career-high 33 points and 20 rebounds versus the Lady Bucs on Sunday. She totaled seven assists, five steals and two blocks as well.
 
LUTTRELL BRINGS HOT SHOOTING FROM THE OUTSIDE
* UWF graduate transfer Haylee Luttrell had her best shooting game of the season on Saturday at Montevallo, making a career-high five 3-pointers on her way to a season-high 18 points. She has also grabbed a season-high six rebounds in the last two games.
* She is third on the team with 9.3 ppg and her 24 triples are one behind Jarnot for the team lead.
 
TAYLOR APPROACHING 4.0 ASSISTS PER GAME
* Junior guard Moriah Taylor has continued to provide solid play at the point guard spot this season, starting all 12 games while ranking third in the GSC with 3.8 assists per game. She leads the league and is 72nd in the country with a 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
* She has at least five assists in six games this season, including the last two and three of the last four.
 
ANDREW PROVIDES INSTANT OFFENSE LAST WEEKEND
* Graduate transfer Jennifer Andrew had a very productive last two games, combining for 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in wins over Montevallo and AUM last weekend. Against her undergrad team UM, she was 3-for-7 with six points, six rebounds and three assists, before scoring a season-high if 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the win over the Warhawks.
 
UWF CONTINUES TO BE A REBOUND FORCE UNDER YELTON
* UWF has finished first or second in rebounding in the GSC in all 11 seasons under Stephanie Lawrence Yelton.
* This season the Argos have grabbed at least 40 boards in every game and rank 14th nationally with 44.0 rebounds per game - first in the GSC.
* UWF has had a double-digit rebound margin in eight of 12 games this year, including seven of the last nine.
 
42ND SEASON OF UWF WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
* UWF enters the weekend with 614 all-time wins dating back 40-plus years to the inaugural season of 1981-82. The Argonauts are 614-531 all-time with six NCAA Tournament appearances, one Elite Eight, four GSC Regular-Season Championships and one GSC tourney title in 19 appearances.
* In 29 seasons of NCAA/GSC membership, the program is 438-337 for a .564 winning pct., ranking fifth among current members and third among those that have been in the league for at least 10 seasons.
  
YELTON IN SEASON 11 AT UWF
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her 11th season at UWF and has a 175-119 record with the Argos … She is 232-203 in her 16th season as a head coach, which includes five seasons at Charleston Southern … The Morrow, Ga. native (suburb south of Atlanta) is a UNC grad from 1996 and was a 4-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, where she won two ACC Championships and the 1994 NCAA National Championship – she threw the inbounds pass on Charlotte Smith's game-winning buzzer beater in the 1994 title game.
* Yelton was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2013-14 and 2018-19.
* She is 12-6 against West Alabama and 8-7 against UAH.

SLY CHASING UWF COACHING RECORD 
* Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is tied for second in the UWF coaching list with her 175 wins.
1. Shannan Bergen won 183 games from 1999-2012
2. Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is at 175 wins from 2012-present.
    Kathy Davis collected 175 victories from 1981-94.

ABOUT WEST ALABAMA
* UWA is 9-5 on the season and comes to town on a 2-game losing skid - dropping games to Union and CBU by single digits. They are a game behind UWF in the GSC standings.
* Bria Dent has 10 double-doubles and is one of the top inside players in the league with 18.1 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Maryanne Logsdon leads the GSC with 29 3-pointers and is second on the team with 11.6 ppg. Jala Williams' 87 assists and 6.2 assists per game lead the GSC as well.
 
SERIES HISTORY
* UWF is 33-34 against UWA all-time since the first meeting in the 1978-79 season. The Argos are 17-8 in games played in Pensacola but have lost three of the last four after winning the previous nine.
* The Tigers have won the last four in the series as the Argos have not scored more than 57 in any of those.
 
ABOUT ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE
* UAH is 3-11 this season and 3-7 in league play entering Thursday's game at Valdosta State. They have lost their last five since defeating Shorter and Delta State in early December.
* Sophomore transfer Haley Nichols leads the team with 12.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game from the center position. She had scored in double figures in seven-consecutive games before being held to just two points against Union on Monday. Freshman Andie Flatgard leads the team with 11 3-pointers and is second in scoring with 8.2 ppg.
 
SERIES HISTORY
* This will be the 61st meeting in the series with the Chargers. UWF leads 33-27 but UAH has won the last two and six of the last seven. In fact, the Chargers have won the last three in Pensacola.
