No. 6/7 UWF Opens Crucial October Stretch

The Argos have won their last eight games in October

• UWF opens a stretch where it will play three of the next four on the road, with the next three against traditional GSC powers. Saturday's game at West Alabama will start at 4 pm CT and be televised on FloSports and on the radio on ESPN Pensacola.

FOUR DOWNS WITH UWF
1) UWF is averaging 36.5 points per game (28th) on 464.5 yds of total offense (14th) with 177.7 rushing (43rd) & 286.8 passing (10th). The Argos rank 34th in 3rd Down Conversion and fifth in 4th Down Conversion.
2) UWF ranks 19th in the country in total defense (269.5 ypg) while ranking fifth with 23 QB sacks and 20th with 49 tackles for loss. Opponents are averaging just 179.3 yards passing and 90.2 yards rushing.
3) UWF is 3-0 in league play for the third time in seven seasons The Argos are looking to move to 4-0 for the second time, joining the 2019 squad.
4) UWF has scored over 40 points in the last three games. The school record is four-consecutive set in 2021.

HERE ARE SOME MORE QUICK HITTERS ON THE ARGOS

• The Argos are second nationally in Red Zone Defense, allowing just a 50 pct. success rate. On offense, UWF ranks 50th with an 84.0 pct. Red Zone success rate, scoring 20 TD & 1 FG in 25 trips.

• Senior QB Peewee Jarrett is third in the GSC (26th in NCAA) in completion percentage (64.4%), and 11th in passing efficiency, 10th in passing yards per game (277.8) and 22nd in completions per game (19.3).

• Senior WR John Jiles averages 111.7 receiving yards per game and 22.3 yards per reception.


UWF FOOTBALL 101

• The 2023 campaign is the seventh for UWF in its history.

• Kaleb Nobles was hired as the second head coach in Dec. of 2022. 

• UWF has won a share of the Gulf South Conference title in 2021 & 2022.

• UWF has made four appearances in the NCAA Playoffs (2017, 2019, 2021 & 2022).

• The Argonauts have won Super Region 2 & reached the semifinals three times (2017, 2019, 2022).

• UWF won the 2019 national championship and was the runner-up in 2017.

ABOUT WEST ALABAMA

• UWA is 2-4 overall and 1-3 in GSC action following a 24-6 road loss to West Georgia last week.

• The Tigers have hung their hat on defense again this season, holding opponents to 109.5 yards on the ground while also raching up nine interceptions, with at least one in all six games.

SERIES HISTORY

• UWF leads the series 4-3 thanks to a current 4-game winning streak.

• There have been some memorable moments in the series - In 2017, UWA clinched a share of the GSC title with the regular-season win; UWF responded a month later with a 28-21 come-from-behind win in the national quarterfinals; UWF claimed a 47-7 win in 2021 for the largest margin of victory in the series.

• In the last meeting at Tiger Stadium, No. 4 UWF defeated No. 21 UWA 47-7, with the lone Tiger score coming on a fumble return midway through the fourth quarter - holding UWA without an offensive TD for the first time since 2012.

JILES EMERGING AS AN ELITE POSTSEASON AWARD CANDIDATE

• UWF senior WR John Jiles has been absolutely unstoppable at times this season. The Virginia Union transfer rankes fourth in Division 2 with 670 receiving yards & is first with nine TD, while ranking fourth with 111.7 yards per game.

• In the two games prior to last week, he combined for 452 receiving yards on 19 catches with five TD, earning GSC Offensive Player of the Week both times.

• Two weeks ago at North Greenville, the Wake Forest, N.C. native set a UWF single-game record with 277 yards on 11 catches. His yards are the highest in D2 this season, the second-most at any NCAA level and the fourth-most in GSC history.

LEGGETT GOES FOR 109 RECEIVING YARDS
• UWF senior WR Caden Leggett had a career-high 109 receiving yards on five receptions last week against Shorter.
• The performance was the second 100-yard game of his career, eclipsing the 107-yard day against Warner in the 2022 season opener.
• Since transferring to UWF from Texas Tech a year ago, the Georgetown, Texas product has 62 receptions for 968 yards and 13 TD.

.PEEWEE'S BIG ADVENTURE
• Senior QB Peewee Jarrett has benefitted greatly from the altered passing philosophy of first year head coach Kaleb Nobles, which has resulted in a 64.4 passing completion percentage for the Iowa native.
• He has already had four of six games with a completion percentage of 60 percent or higher.

MCMULLEN TAKING UP RESIDENCE IN OPPONENTS BACKFIELD
• Graduate DL John McMullen has seven quarterback sacks to rank fifth in the country. That figure is already halfway to the UWF and GSC record of 14.5, set by John Williamson in 2017.
• The Northern Michigan transfer from Kankakee, Ill. has 27.5 sacks in his career. He was a 3-time All-GLIAC performer for the Wildcats.

ROBINSON FEASTING ON BALL CARRIERS
• Sophomore LB Walker Robinson is tied for the team lead with 30 tackles, shinning since taking over the starting MLB role three games ago.\
• In fact, the Fort Walton Beach, Florida native has posted the top two tackle games of this career in the last two weeks, stopping 10 NGU players two weeks ago and eight Shorter guys last week.

ORTIZ NABS THIRD-STRAIGHT GSC AWARD, LEADS LB IN INTERCEPTIONS
• R-Fr. LB Ralph Ortiz was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive time this week. He is tied for the GSC lead and ranks 23rd nationally with three interceptions.
• Additionally, he is one of only seven linebackers across all NCAA divisions with three picks and the only one in Division 2.
• Ortiz is the first player to earn three-straight GSC rookie awards since 2014 when former Florida Tech quarterback Mark Cato claimed the first four honors of that season.
• The three awards for Ortiz are now tied for the third most in a season in the league record book.

SCORING APLENTY VS GSC
• UWF has scored 139 points in the first three GSC contests - the most in the first three league games in program history.
• The previous mark came last season when the Argos scored 118 points in the first three league games.
• Last season, UWF averaged 40.1 points per game in the seven league contests - a school record.
• The three-consecutive games scoring over 40 points are one shy of tying the school record set in 2021.

ARGOS LOVING THAT PUMPKIN SPICE FOOTBALL
• UWF is 20-7 (.741) all-time in the month of October. The Argos have won their last eight and are 14-1 in their last 15 during the Pumpkin month.
