No. 6/7 UWF Hosts Shorter For Homecoming This Week

The Argos have averaged 48.5 points in two GSC games this season

• UWF returns to Pensacola for Homecoming this Saturday, hosting Shorter. Kickoff at Pen Air Field is set for 4 pm CT and the game will be televised on FloSports and YurView FL, and on the radio on ESPN Pensacola via the UWF Sports Network.

FOUR DOWNS WITH UWF
1) UWF is averaging 35.4 points per game (31st) on 446.2 yds of total offense (17th) with 153.4 rushing (64th) & 292.8 passing (9th). The Argos rank 26th in 3rd Down Conversion and second in 4th Down Conversion.
2) UWF ranks 24th in the country in total defense (273.4 ypg) while ranking fouth with 21 QB sacks and 24th with 40 tackles for loss. Opponents are averaging just 176.2 yards passing and 97.2 yards rushing.
3) UWF is 2-0 in league play for the fourth time in seven seasons The Argos are looking to move to 3-0 for the third time, joining the 2018 & 2019 squads.
4) UWF is playing a Homecoming football game for the seventh time on Saturday. The Argos are 3-3 all-time after last year's win over Mississippi College.

UWF FOOTBALL 101
• The 2023 campaign is the seventh for UWF in its history.
• Kaleb Nobles was hired as the second head coach in Dec. of 2022. 
• UWF has won a share of the Gulf South Conference title in 2021 & 2022.
• UWF has made four appearances in the NCAA Playoffs (2017, 2019, 2021 & 2022).
• The Argonauts have won Super Region 2 & reached the semifinals three times (2017, 2019, 2022).
• UWF won the 2019 national championship and was the runner-up in 2017.


SERIES HISTORY
• UWF has won all six previous meetings, including all three previous games in Pensacola in 2016, 2018 & 2021. This is the first matchup at Pen Air Field

ABOUT SHORTER
• Shorter is 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in GSC play after back-to-back losses to Delta State and Mississippi College.
• The Hawks are a fairly balanced play-calling squad with 181 rushes and 137 pass attempts. They average 156 rushing yards per game and 174 through the air.
• QB Josh Brown has completed 64 percent of his passes with two TD and three interceptions. Justus Durant has five rushing TD & leads the team with 263 rushing yards. Jaiden Dollar has 239 rush yards.


JILES EMERGING AS AN ELITE POSTSEASON AWARD CANDIDATE
• UWF senior WR John Jiles has been absolutely unstoppable the past two weeks. The Virginia Union transfer leads Division 2 with 646 receiving yards & eight TD, while ranking second with 129.2 yards per game.
• In the last two contests he has combined for 452 receiving yards on 19 catches with five TD, earning GSC Offensive Player of the Week both times.
• Last week at North Greenville, the Wake Forest, N.C. native set a UWF single-game record with 277 yards on 11 catches. His yards are the highest in D2 this season, the second-most at any NCAA level and the fourth-most in GSC history.

MCMULLEN A FORCE IN OPPONENT BACKFIELDS
• Graduate DL John McMullen has seven quarterback sacks to rank third in the country. That figure is already halfway to the UWF and GSC record of 14.5, set by John Williamson in 2017.
• The Northern Michigan transfer from Kankakee, Ill. has 27.5 sacks in his career. He was a 3-time All-GLIAC performer for the Wildcats.
