HUNTSVILLE, Ala - The UWF Men's Soccer team faced the Lee Flames yesterday evening in the GSC Championship semifinal match. After a tough loss in the regular season to the Flames, and it being the only game that the Argos dropped in the 2023 season, the team was looking for redemption.
The first 45 consisted of a plethora of back and forth play from both teams, with strong defending as the team's kept the shots under five each. The Flames out shot the Argos 3-1 going into the second half.
Heading into the second half and with a sense of confidence. 15 minutes in, First Team All GSC player Josiah Fontenot found the back of the net in the 61st minute after a slotted ball from Caue Novaes to the back post found the foot of Fontenot to put the Argos ahead 1-0. Just ten minutes later Fontenot used his momentum from the first goal to put his team ahead again.
Keegan Lynch hit a driven ball down the side line of the field to put Fontenot in a 1v1 situation. The Florida native found himself on the left side of the 18-yard box, and with a bit of space he created for himself, Fontenot shot near-post with the defender still on him to put the score at 2-0 in the 71st minute. These two goals now puts Fontenot at nine goals on the season.
The Argos outshot the Flames 6-1 in the second half, and solidified their spot in the championship match on Sunday.
UWF will face Delta State, after the Statesmen defeated Auburn Montgomery 1-0. In their last matchup back in mid September, the teams finished their 90 minute match in a 1-1 draw. An own goal from DSU and a goal from Delta State's Hardy Lewis gave the match an even score.
The Argos will face Delta State on Sunday, November 12th at 12pm CT in Huntsville Alabama at John Hunt Park.
