Argos Sweep Up Regular Season with Win over Union

UWF Heads into Semifinals of GSC Championship at UWF Field House

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Argonauts (23-7, 15-1 GSC) took care of business in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon against Union (6-25, 5-11 GSC) at Fred DeLay Gymnasium for its second sweep of the week (25-11, 25-15, 28-26).

UWF thoroughly dominated the stat sheet, tallying 49 kills while holding Union to 26 and winning the hitting percentage battle .320 to .077. The first two sets were never truly in doubt as the Argos outhit the Lady Bulldogs in the opening frame .435 to -.15 and in the second .52 to .172.

The first points of the game were indicative of what was to come in the form of kills from Damyah Joyner and Jacque Martin. Emily Breazeale added an ace between Martin's two kills to go up 4-0. Breazeale and Martin proceeded to open another run with kills ahead of two errors and a block by Annie Monaco and Jenna Zydlo. With an ace by Martin and a kill from Gabi Moulton, the Argos were already up 11-2. With the score later narrowed to 13-9, Joyner and Moulton would connect for an incredible run, as four of five points were Joyner kills assisted by Moulton. By the end of the set, Joyner had five kills on as many attacks. The four points were the start of a set-clinching 12-2 span that included two kills and a block from the combo of Martin and Zydlo, as well as a Bailee Sterling ace and two more from the arm of Breazeale.

The second set was more of the same, as UWF began and ended it with five consecutive points and most of the same contributors kept finding headway as their team cruised to the 2-0 match lead. UWF led 10-4 in the third frame thanks to a key 8-2 run started by a kill and ace from Martin and continued with three errors, two Sterling kills and one from Alex Oliver. The Lady Bulldogs had no intentions of going quietly, though, as it gradually ramped up momentum and pulled within 20-18.

Martin then scored her team's next two points via kill, but Union stunningly rattled off a 5-1 run to make three set points at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25. Each one of those threats was fended off by kills from Oliver off Moulton sets, as the senior from Jasper, Ala., was determined to go out with a bang in her final regular season match. After the third one, the Argos were determined to not delay the result today. Joyner added one more kill to cap off an incredible performance before Sterling wrapped up the day with a kill of her own.

Also in her last regular season game as an Argo, Martin led the team in kills with 12 on a .429 percentage in addition to six digs, three aces and three block assists. However, it was Joyner who stole the show in terms of hitting percentage, as she sent 11 of her 14 attacks to the floor with no errors for a jaw-dropping .786 outing, tying Camila Vazquez last season against West Alabama for the fifth-best percentage in a match in program history. Zydlo had eight kills and assisted five blocks. Meg Brackhan had 11 digs and six assists, while Annie Monaco scooped seven attacks and Breazeale added six to her three aces. Moulton assisted 37 kills and scored kills on each of her four attacks. Sterling and Oliver each scored six kills, and Oliver did so with just one miscue for a .417 afternoon.

With the No. 1 spot already clinched with last night's win, UWF gets to rest and watch the first two rounds of the GSC Championship before finding out who they will face in the semifinals at 2 pm on Saturday, November 18 back in the friendly confines of the UWF Field House.
