UWF Selected For NCAA Playoffs For Fifth Time in Six Seasons

The Argonauts will play at Delta State on Saturday, Nov. 18

INDIANAPOLIS – The UWF football team was selected to participate in the 2023 NCAA Division 2 Football Championship as announced by the NCAA Committee on Sunday.

UWF is unseeded in Super Region 2 and will travel to No. 2 seed Delta State on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. at Parker Field at McCool Stadium in Cleveland, Mississippi. The committee only seeds the top four teams in each super region, allowing them to place the three unseeded teams among the bracket to reduce flights in the early rounds and regular-season rematches if possible.

UWF is 8-3 under first-year head coach Kaleb Nobles. The Argonauts have one of the top offenses in the country, ranking 20th with 443.3 yards of total offense and 20th in passing offense at 255.9 yards per game. Their 33.7 points per game are 34th nationally. The defense has been stout all season and ranks 13th in Division 2, holding opponents to 260.6 yards per game and 12th with 15.2 points per game.

The Argonauts are making their fifth appearance in the NCAA Playoffs and have a 12-3 all-time record, making them the winningest team in D2 history at .800. UWF won the 2019 national championship and was the 2017 national runner-up. The Argonauts advanced to the national semifinals a year ago after winning the Super Region 2 title for the third time in five seasons. UWF is 64-24 in its history after starting play in 2016.

The four-consecutive trips to the playoffs are tied with Shepherd for the fourth longest active streak among all Division II teams, trailing only the nine straight appearances by Ferris State and the five by Slippery Rock and Colorado Mines.

Delta State comes into the game at 9-1 after winning a share of the Gulf South Conference title at 7-1. The Statesmen are the top offense in the GSC with 464.2 yards per game and 43.5 points per contest. Their 17.4 points allowed are second in the league behind the Argos and 23rd in the country.

UWF won the regular-season meeting, 24-21, in Cleveland on Oct. 21. UWF leads the all-time series 5-3 and has won five of the last six matchups, including the last four in the Mississippi. UWF claimed a 38-27 win in the second round of last year's championship.

Tickets will go on sale Monday and Delta State will announce prices at that time.

Live video will be handled on the NCAA Championship Pass via Hudl and cost $9.95 per game and $19.95 for the first three playoff rounds. ESPN owns the rights to air the national semifinals and championship games.
