PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF women's volleyball team took down Alabama Huntsville, 3-0, in thrilling fashion to claim the 2023 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championship at the UWF Field House on Sunday.
The set scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 35-33 gave UWF its 12th overall tournament title, its sixth-consecutive and 119th for the school as a whole.
UWF (25-7) hit .199 in the defensive stalemate but got key contributions at key moments all match long.
Jenna Zydlo had 14 kills and
Annie Monaco had 13 to lead the offense, while the Argos finished with five blocks and 70 digs.
Tournament Most Outstanding Player
Meg Brackhan finished with 15 digs to go with 17 in Saturday's semifinals. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Moulton and Monaco.
UWF got off to a fast start in the first set, securing a 9-3 edge on the strength of a 7-0 run. UAH closed to within 21-19 before the Chargers made three attack errors prior to
Gabi Moulton's winning kill.
The second set was a back and fourth affair, with each team using 3- and 4-point rallies to claim momentum swings. But UWF fought back from a 23-22 score with kills from Zydlo and Monaco before an attack error from the Chargers put the Argos ahead 2-0.
The Argos led 23-19 in the final set and were poised to win in regulation scoring. But the Chargers had other ideas, scoring five-straight points for a 24-23 lead. That's when things got interesting. The teams played 21 extra points with Monaco finishing it on a kill just inside the back line.
Alex Oliver had six kills in the final set, including huge swings during the extra points. She had kills on UWF's 27th, 28th and 29th points when the Chargers had served for set point.
UWF will now wait to see where it is seeded in the upcoming NCAA South Regional. The tournament field will be announced on Monday evening on ncaa.com at 6:30 p.m. Central Time.
