UWF Set to Host West Alabama in GSC Championship Opening Round

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida women's soccer team is set to host West Alabama in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The contest will take place at UWF Soccer Complex on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m.

Admission for adults are $10 and $5 for students with a valid school ID. Children under five are free.

About UWF
No. 9 UWF secured the GSC regular season title and clinched the one-seed of the conference tournament after a pair of 1-0 wins over West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville last weekend. Both goals over the weekend were scored off set pieces.
 
The victories improved UWF to 15-1-1 overall, 12-1 GSC.
 
Against West Alabama, Isabela Labovic hit an early goal off a corner kick. The header in the seventh minute was the lone goal of the game.
 
Labovic, Mya Swinton and Emilie Dueck Doerkesen led the team with four shots apiece.
 
The following match over Alabama Huntsville was a thrilling 1-0 final with a goal scored in the 85th minute. Charline Favier waws credited the game winner after sinking a goal off a free kick.
 
 
Tigers Performance Versus UWF
It was a decently one-sided game in favor of the Argos throughout 90 minutes of play. UWF outshot the Tigers, 21-3, and held the opponents to one shot on goal. Defender Paige Laidler recorded the single shot on target. She was one of five Tiger players that played a full 90 minutes on pitch.
 
Midfielders Sierra O'Grady and Laila Hepworth led the offensive. The starting midfielders connected with Aileen Charles in the top line for a triple threat. Charles recorded one of the team's three shots.
 
About West Alabama Tigers
The Tigers (6-9-2, 6-6-1 GSC) ended the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Spring Hill. The win gave the Tigers a GSC Championship berth.
 
Venia Makela leads the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. O'Grady and Charles follow with 11 points each.
 
Goalkeeper Wilson Dior has allowed 21 goals in 17 games. She had recorded 65 saves and four shutouts.

The 2023 Gulf South Conference Women's Soccer Championship will begin on November 4 with the four top-seeds hosting the quarterfinal round matchups. The semifinals and championship matches will be hosted by the Huntsville Sports Commission on November 9 and 11, respectively, and will be played on the recently renovated John Hunt Park Championship Field in Huntsville, Ala.
