PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida Men's Basketball Team will head to Tennessee this weekend for a double-header against Union and Christian Brothers on Friday and Sunday. Tip-off against the Bulldogs is set for 7:30 pm in Jackson while the match-up with the Buccaneers will be at 3 pm.
UWF (3-6, 1-4 in the Gulf South Conference) is coming off a tough loss against fourth-ranked West Georgia, 82-77, last Sunday.
Xavier Washington had another big game with 19 points and nine rebounds, with
Eli Brown,
Tautvydas Kupstas and
Channick Nkoma reaching double-figures in scoring as well.
West Florida, currently ninth in the GSC standings, is averaging 73.6 points per game while allowing 74.4 points per contest, which is sixth best in the league. The Argonauts are tied for fifth in opponent field goal percentage (.444), seventh in free throw percentage (.694), fifth in defensive rebounds (24.7) and fifth in turnover margin (1.11).
White Distributing At An Elite Level:
Sterling White III, has been at the top of the country in assists all season long. White, a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, has recorded 36 assists on the year, with 22 coming in the last three games. Sterling also leads all of Division II and is second among all players in all divisions of college basketball with an assist to turnover margin of 12 (36 assists to three turnovers). White is also eighth in the conference in assists per contest with four per game.
Kupstas Excelling From Outside: Kupstas, a graduate student from Kaunas, Lithuania, has given the Argonauts a lift from the three-point line, knocking down a team-high 23 three-pointers on the season. Tautvydas has five threes in three different contests in 2023, with his last performance where he went five-for-six from outside, putting him among the best three-point shooting percentages games in team history. Kupstas also ranks among the top eight players in the league in both three-point percentage (.418) and threes per game (2.6).
Washington Cleaning Up The Glass: Washington, a native of Palmetto, Florida, has been rebounding well as of late, leading to his team-high 72 boards, eight per contest. He's averaged 11 rebounds in his last three games, which included a season-high 15 in the overtime loss against Mississippi College. Xavier is currently second in the conference in both total rebounds and rebounds per game, trailing only Maalik Cartwright of Delta State.
Scouting Union: The Bulldogs, led by Coach David Niven, come into the contest at 3-5 and 0-4 in GSC play, after a 88-70 loss at home against Christian Brothers. Ahmad Johnson, a junior, currently leads Union with 16 points per game on 50 percent shooting. Fellow upperclassmen, Justin Debuck and Jeremiah Littlepage, lead the Bulldogs in assists (28) and rebounds per game (6.4), while Jordan Pyke has established himself as one of the best freshmen in the GSC with his 12.4 points per game, which is boosted by his 29-point performance against league-leading, West Georgia.
Series History: All-time, the Argonauts are 9-8 against Union, with wins in three of the last four contests. UWF split with the Bulldogs, claiming a victory in Jackson, Tennessee by a score of 85-79.
Scouting Christian Brothers: CBU, led by John Reilly, comes into the weekend at 4-3 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Bucs come into the match-up averaging nearly 82 points per game, fueled by Anias Futrell's 20.1 points per contest, which is the third-highest mark in the league. Christian Jones is averaging 4.9 assists per game, also the third best in the GSC.
Series History: All-time, UWF is 6-15 against CBU, with their last win coming in December 2022, 71-58, at the UWF Field House.
Sano Rutatika recorded 11 points and four rebounds in the victory.
