PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Claire Sutherland-Case had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while adding a career-high five blocks as UWF defeated Delta State, 59-49, at the UWF Field House on Sunday.
In addition to Sutherland-Case's big performance,
Brooke Kane also notched her first double-double of the year with 19 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
UWF (6-2, 3-1 Gulf South) turned in another strong defensive effort, holding their second-consecutive opponent to under 30 percent shooting. DSU finished with 28 percent shooting and a season-low 24 percent from outside.
"We had to grind this game out," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We struggled to make shots early but finally settled in during the second half. Claire and Brooke gave us a 1-2 punch at the forward spots that made a huge difference."
The scoring came at a premium in the first half, with the Argos holding a 13-12 lead after 10 minutes and 23-22 at the half.
UWF used a 7-0 run late in the third to push their lead to 41-28. The Lady Statesmen trimmed the margin to seven points before the Argos got driving layups from Kane and
Delaney Trushel in the final two minutes to put the game away.
UWF will be off for a week until hosting West Georgia next Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.
